AIBU to think my Mirena is coming out?

Apologies TMI WARNING and posting here for traffic.
Am going nuts here and could really use advice.
I had Mirena fitted 2 weeks ago as part of abalation due to excessive bleeding.
I've had light bleeding for a week but bad cramps today with some funny discharge (creamy brown, lumpy consistency - not clots)
I have an awful feeling of irritation in my vagina and can feel one of the strings.
My GP isnt available until Thursday and the consultant office isn't open until morning.
Could someone advise if this sounds like the mirena is coming out and do I need to do something before tomorrow (in Ireland so no walk in clinics etc).
Thanks and apologies for misuse of AIBU

Can you feel the tip of it, or just the string? If just the string, it is more likely that you have an infection, which I was told is not uncommon up to 3 weeks or so after fitting.
If you can't get in to see your gp is there a family planning clinic where you can go to get it checked?

dementedpixie · 01/05/2018 16:44

You're supposed to be able to feel the strings as that's how they remove it. Could be an infection if you're getting discharge

RatherBeRiding · 01/05/2018 16:46

I doubt very much it's coming out but it does sound like an infection. You are meant to feel the strings but if they bother you I believe your GP/family planning place can shorten them for you?

imsorryiasked · 01/05/2018 16:46

I would say you have an infection which you need to get treated regardless of whether the coil is coming out. As pp said you should always be able to feel the strings if you try, but I doubt think they should be" obvious"

Don’t trust it for contraception until it’s checked. 1 in 20 come out and it’s more common in the first 2 weeks. Either your GP or the Dr that inserted it can check. Are there any family planning clinics you can attend in the meantime? I have vague recollections of the Well Woman clinic in Dublin but not sure how widespread these are

Thank you so much for the quick replies. The string is slightly outside my vaginal opening so I don't need to feel up into my vagina iykwim. This seems slightly low (I dont know if it was this long since it was inserted but I dont think so.
I do think you are right and its probably an infection. Am going to ring around and see whats the earliest appointment I can get.
Thanks

Thanks Peterrabbit, luckily its not for contraception. A Tubal ligation 9 years ago sorted that problem 😁

The strings shouldn't be at your vaginal opening, they should be just outside your cervix unless they didn't shorten them at all. If you feel inside can you feel the coil itself?

Ginseng1 · 01/05/2018 17:13

A couple of months ago got mirena fitted didn't get discharge etc but the string got lower n lower till it (the string) almost hanging out 2weeks later. felt this wasn't right n went back & GP said oh I'll just cut it short again the device popped out! So likelyhood is it had dropped out of position. I got the jaydess (3 year one) in then (was the only one she had in) & no problems.

astoundedgoat · 01/05/2018 17:13

You definitely shouldn't feel the strings from the outside - I can't imagine any doctor would leave them that long. Have you had a dig inside? The feeling of irritation may well be the mirena itself digging into your vagina. Is your surgery open at all? Are you in a city with walk in surgeries? I'd be inclined to have it looked at this evening...

Feeling the strings is normal and when I am on so my cervix is lower I have to tuck them back in with mine. The lumpy discharge could be an infection.

Brown is normal for discharge (old blood), but lumpy is less so, do get it checked. You haven't mentioned if it smells?

Normally at my doctors they keep the strings long until after the 6 week check.

It is only 2 weeks after your ablation, there could be some irritation etc still present, it isn't a standard coil fitting. As part of the healing from that, you should expect light blood loss for several days, followed by a watery discharge for two or three weeks.

Well it's out!
Based on the last couple of posts I decided to check further up (don't know why I didnt do that to start with) and it was just sitting there and came out in my hand.
Will follow up with consultant first thing tomorrow.
Thanks again so much everyone!
