To HATE selling secondhand stuff??!!

ARGHH!!! I have to admit I usually drop stuff off at the charity shop or give to friends instead (only if they want/need it obvs) but for the one or two items we really splashed out I know it's the right thing to do to sell them and try and recoup a bit of money. But OMG I hate it so much.
First you post the stuff online. Nice photos, write a good description. Flag up any scratches or bits missing. All good.
Then a few people are interested. Hurray! Then the questions start. Is it in good condition? Well it's been used. So look at the photos (always very clear and candid) and decide!!! Can I send more photos. Can they come and look at it. No-one ever gives an exact time so you're hovering around at home for hours wondering when they'll show. Will you take less money. Hmmm I wasn't expecting it to have any marks on it (WTF? It's been used by two toddlers!). Can I deliver the item to [insert name of location on the other side of town]. The number of people who message saying "is this available", "can I come and look" then NEVER MESSAGE YOU AGAIN. Why why why?
And endless questions about accessories and manuals and then you're searching your attic for bits of stuff that go with it. Only for them to go quiet/turn up and not want it/try and knock the price down to the point it's really not worth the time you've now put into selling the sodding thing.
Aaaand breathe. Perhaps I'm just not good with people?!

I gave away a bookshelf on FB, clearly stated that it was about 2m high and 1m wide, couldn't be dismantled.
That it would need to be picked up and that I wouldn't be able to assist with moving it at all.

About 12 people asked me to deliver
3 said they could come and get it, could I help them lift it onto the van.

Many many many people said, 'I can pick it up today, do you think it'll fit in Fiesta/Polo/other small hatchback. One woman insisted on arguing with me saying that it'd be fine to go in her Ford Focus. Hmm I should have let her try.

He traided a pickup truck bed for a hand gun at the weekend......at least it takes up less space

Only in AmericaGrin

SilverDragonfly1 · 02/05/2018 19:18

Haha, you hope it was in America!

I give to charity or the tip. Cannot be arsed with trying to sell things for all the reasons already mentioned.

I give to charity or the tip. Cannot be arsed with trying to sell things for all the reasons already mentioned.

That's a shame, we've raised a few thousand pounds over the last 20 years by selling our used/unwanted stuff, including books, dvds, furniture, curtains, hobby stuff we've got bored with, even a couple of derelict garden sheds!

A lot of it was selling off our son's stuff, i.e. his cot, prams, car seats, clothes, bikes, scooters, toys, games, consoles, phones and Ipads, etc., which we have put the money into his bank account and amounts to £2,500 so far sat there waiting for him when he needs it.

For our own stuff, we use the proceeds to buy new stuff, and only this year, it's been used to buy a new lawn mower, wide screen TV and a new satellite box.

That's a lot of money to lose for the want of a bit of time and effort to sell it. You get a really good feeling inside when you look at something new and know that you've not actually had to "pay for it".

The key to hassle free selling is get the platform right, i.e. avoid freecycle and facebook like the plague, and research what you've got and what they've sold for (i.e. ebay sold listings), postage costs, etc. That way, you can ditch the low value stuff that won't cover fees and postage or package it as job lots. Also, you need to develop your own "tyre kicker" radar and not engage with them. Lots of genuine/good buyers out there.

I have just had an experience on EBay- person asks (after winning) loads of questions about the item. I was clear on the listing used, few bobbles (cashmere) but still loads of questions - this person clearly wanted it to be brand new (it isn’t) This was an item from a high end cashmere shop. If new would have cost £300 plus. This person was paying less than 10% of that .... I was relieved when they said it might not be for them and have sold it to the next bidder. What a waste of time

GinAndTonicAndASliceOfLemon · 04/05/2018 18:22

Kazzy - how do you deal with the time waster types?

ALongHardWinter · 04/05/2018 18:39

Yep,tell me about it. You state that it is in good condition, but not perfect. Then they start complaining about it not being in perfect condition. You arrange for them to come and look at it on Tuesday morning between 10 and midday then at 3pm you get a phone call saying they can't make it today, can they reschedule for tomorrow? Then they turn up tomorrow (2 hours late) and try to knock you down on the price. It got to the point where I suspected, before long, that they would be asking ME to pay THEM for taking it off my hands. Angry

Kazzyhoward · 04/05/2018 19:34

Kazzy - how do you deal with the time waster types?

I've dealt with the great general public since I was 10 (I used to work in my parents' shop), and throughout my proper working life. Over time, you learn to spot "the signs" of time wasting and grasping idiots. I work on balance of probabilities, i.e. the first sign and I no longer engage, I don't give second chances, I don't give benefit of the doubt. If someone is coming, i.e. to buy something or a tradesman to give a quote or do work, I fix a specific time for them, anything more than 30 minutes before or after and they're history, no if's no butt's. If someone asks a stupid question re an ebay item, I don't reply (i.e. if the answer is already in the listing or it's a stupid question in any other way).

I absolutely accept that over those years, I'll have missed out on opportunities, whether a better job, a new client/customer, selling a pram for a tenner more, or whatever, but I'm "better off" overall by not having the stress of dealing with pillocks. Life is too short to pander to chancers and incompetent/selfish people.

By concentrating my efforts on people who do what they say, don't ask stupid questions, treat me with respect, I have a much happier life overall.

GinAndTonicAndASliceOfLemon · 07/05/2018 10:18

Thank you @kazzyhoward I have switched tactics!

morespaceneeded · 07/05/2018 10:43

I had someone come round to look at a pushchair to see what it was like before she ordered a brand new one. Ffs go to John Lewis.

lardass88 · 07/05/2018 10:48

I'm the same! Had bag fulls of girls clothes and clothes that don't fit me... ended up putting it all in clothes banks. The palaver of listing and selling with a profit of pennies just isn't worth it

Puzzledandpissedoff · 07/05/2018 11:01

I was interested to see adverts for ebay in the press this weekend, clearly aimed at small private sellers

At one time that just wouldn't have been necessary; ebay was just the "go to" for so many of us ... which makes me wonder what's really going on behind the scenes

CheshireChat · 07/05/2018 11:39

This thread explains why the guy we bought some furniture from was happy to chuck in a lower value item and delivery for free despite us obviously offering to pay for both!

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 07/05/2018 11:51

Most things I just give away, as once you count the time and hassle the money you can get from selling often isn't worth it.

I've sold a couple of items on a local selling site asking for collection from my home when I'm in anyway, although a bit of a hassle it avoided me carrying them to the charity shop :). I tend to advertise them once for sale cheaply, then give away for free.

I sold two items on eBay for £50 ish. The second got delayed in the post and I foolishly lost my proof of postage so I almost had to refund, until it turned up. A huge hassle. Luckily the buyer was honest and told me when it suddenly arrived just before I was going to refund.

I was on mat leave at the time but now I'm working I probably wouldn't sell on eBay at all as it took quite a bit of time with having to photograph and set up the ad, package, take to post office. A friend sells lots on eBay and has a routine for it, but if you just sell the odd item it is time consuming. Now I have limited free time I'd rather enjoy that than earn the odd £50 tbh.

expatinscotland · 07/05/2018 11:59

YANBU. Then you get the people who want £200 for their nasty, knackered ol' sofa.

Car boots, you get mobbed upon arrival by folks wanting tech and jewellery, but if you don't have that or specialised items a lot of people swing by right before closing and offer 10p for everything. I wonder how anymore makes any money at those.

Ebay, buyers fucking sellers over left and right.

I give it all away to charity, too.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 07/05/2018 12:04

Car boots, you get mobbed upon arrival by folks wanting tech and jewellery

And gold ... don't forget the gold!! Hmm

Quite why valuable jewellery would be taken to a boot sale is anyone's guess, but our city has now closed its Sunday boot sale - which at least means one less circle of hell to navigate

Theweasleytwins · 07/05/2018 12:37

We have local a local freebay which is good, got a single pushchair from a lady in the same housing estate- gave her one of my handmade crochet keyrings as a thank you and she was quite chuffed

We gave away a changing table, attracted a lot of interest. The lady that asked first got it and it was a lot of hassel, kept changing when she was coming- needing my husband to take it to her car with no help from her-not pregnant-just lazy

BobbinThreadbare123 · 07/05/2018 13:00

I won't use eBay any more. Too many postage scammers and liars. Also, people who wouldn't wait for a few extra days for the item to turn up when it was bloody snowing! If you will only cough up for 2nd class, you're going to have to be patient in the Beast from the East. EBay don't give a shit and just side with buyers.

Giving away an item on Freegle and getting bloody ghosted is pathetic. People are so rude. I once had about 50 sweary, abusive messages from a student I gave a free bloody printer to. He didn't know you had to buy ink. My ad specifically said 'no ink'.

@OneStepSideways

Also I'm shocked by how many people send clothes unwashed! I've received things that smell like they've been stored in a damp garage for years.

I take pride in the clothes I sell. Clearly described, freshly washed and ironed, posted quickly. I hate it when you pay for something then have to wait over a week for it to arrive, with no word from the seller when they intend to post Angry

It's an absolute disgrace isn't it! If you want to give yourself a coronary, have a look at Vinted where you will be greeted with pages and pages of crumpled tat. I honestly don't know how people have the nerve!

I rarely have issues but like you, everything is washed, ironed, measured, fully described and posted on the next working day. Send as you would like to receive.
