To think it's grabby to

have to insert your car registration plate when parking?

To my mind, a space has been paid for for a certain amount of time, regardless who uses it. They shouldn't get paid double if one driver doesn't use all their allotted time.

I used to give my tickets to other drivers if there was any time left. And now I can't.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 01/05/2018 08:56

I always give my ticket to other drivers even if I've inserted the car registration. It's the space I've paid for - not the car!

Greedy fucking grabby bastards. As are the ones who have machines that "don't give change". Just fucking why?

Bluelady · 01/05/2018 08:59

The ones that don't give change drive me mad, it's so dishonest. Our car parks are 80p for an hour and £1.20 for two - what's wrong with 50p an hour and £1 for two?

EyeRollChampion · 01/05/2018 09:08

YANBU. You can't sell the same goods/service twice to different customers!

GuestWW · 01/05/2018 09:23

Our local station does this and then uses a camera to check every number plate in and out. So completely automated fines can be issued, no one needs to be employed and you cannot do the good deed of sharing tickets. You have to pay to park all day whether you want to or not.

But I am not in anyway angry...

Dancergirl · 01/05/2018 09:31

Pay by phone? Most car parks do this now.

OliviaStabler · 01/05/2018 09:34

Very annoying. I much prefer the ones where you pay on exit so only pay for what you actually used.

Buster72 · 01/05/2018 09:47

You paid for a service. Once you leave the car park the service is over. You can not transfer that service.
I am always flabbergasted at parking issues. You live on an island (UK) with many people and millions of cars and not a whole lot of land.
No need to get your knickers in a twist if you want a guaranteed parking spot and mostly free get a motorcycle or bicycle.....

Bluelady · 01/05/2018 09:51

Did anyone mention a guaranteed parking spot? The complaint, as I read it, is about paying for something you haven't used and being stopped from doing someone else a kindness with the unused portion.

Jessikita · 01/05/2018 09:57

I agree. It also infuriated me that airlines etc overbook. They’re taking the money twice for the same thing!

Want2beme · 01/05/2018 10:05

I was once fined when I handed my car parking ticket to someone else. Fine arrived in the post. Where I live now, in a small town outside of UK, people always pass on their tickets.

pigmcpigface · 01/05/2018 10:23

For me, it depends on where.

If it's a charity or an arts organisation that relies on car parking to fund itself, I think everyone should pay. (There's an outdoor museum near me that is £8 to park, but free entry; I think everyone should pay to support them).

If it's a bloody commercial carpark, or for a shopping centre, I think it's super-grabby and not really on.

Olympiathequeen · 01/05/2018 10:25

I can never remember mine

Sparklesocks · 01/05/2018 10:29

Oh it's the worst, as you say - if it's already been paid for then it's the same if you'd been there for the entirety. It's a cynical money making ploy!

QueenOfAccidentalDeathStares · 01/05/2018 10:35

wasn't there a legal case where two smart cars parked in one spot, and had one parking ticket? They successfully argued the ticket was per space and not per car.

Cobblersandhogwash · 01/05/2018 12:13

Buster72, I don't think anyone is getting their knickers in a twist at all.

However, if I pay for three hours parking and by chance I don't use all three hours, I have still paid for that time. It shouldn't be an opportunity for the parking firm to double their money.

OP posts:
Waggingmyginger · 01/05/2018 12:23

It reduces the need to staff. The more they get the public to do (self scan checkouts, self check-in, parking tickets, booking holidays online not through an agent) they all reduce overheads for companies as they need less employees.

babybythesea · 01/05/2018 12:40

I hate this too. Can take my number plate but can't give change. If I pop into town to put a cheque in, it costs me £1.20 for the privilege. But if I don't have the correct change then it can cost £1.50 or £2.00. And I can't even pass that on now.
So instead of paying to use the town car park and possibly paying over the odds by not having the right change, or not using the time I pay for, I just go to the bigger out of town supermarket. No trawling from shop to shop, lugging bags, no constantly watching the clock, and free parking. I'd like to support small businesses but all of the above plus the fact they are a bit more expensive, and I can't get everything I need anyway and would have to go to the supermarket to get lots of my shopping, means I don't. I do the easier option.

Buster72 · 02/05/2018 19:39

Why shouldn't someone make money on their land? It's not grabby, or does the business you are in give stuff away too?

Shinygoldbauble · 02/05/2018 19:43

Yes but if you go to a cafe and only eat half your meal they don't try to sell it to someone else.

Buster72 · 02/05/2018 19:46

A parking lot is a business. If you don't like the way they do things park elsewhere. Alternatively use public transport or if that is not viable get a motorcycle. Guaranteed parking usually free.

Cobblersandhogwash · 02/05/2018 20:47

Of course we can park elsewhere. What a stupid thing to say.

The car park business is getting paid twice for the same time. To me, that's a con and grabby.

And the argument, "Oh it's a business. It can do what it likes." is sooooo lame and lazy. 🙄

Like businesses should be able to operate in a vacuum outside of what is right and proper.

OP posts:
sonjadog · 02/05/2018 20:50

The people who own the car park want to earn as much as possible. They have found a new way to do it. Businesses finding ways to earn more money as not being "grabby" ffs. Businesses are profit driven, they aren't there to save people money.

Aridane · 02/05/2018 20:52

YABU

Cobblersandhogwash · 02/05/2018 21:22

Yes ffs. 🙄

And it is most certainly grabby.

I think it's embarrassing to make more money that way.

Just because businesses are profit driven doesn't mean they should operate exactly as they please, in a moral vacuum.

OP posts:
babybythesea · 02/05/2018 22:51

I do 'park elsewhere.' I live very rurally. There's no public transport. I couldn't have a motorcycle - how do I get my two kids plus shopping on one?? So I don't use the town of my shopping. I go to the free supermarket. Less hassle plus no parking fees.
But then they wonder why nobody goes into town....
