Getting desperate now... third night in a row with no sleep and this is happening frequently.

I have no reason burn my anxiety to be awake all night. No kids, no loud noises... just my own worries.

I’ve tried natural things like baths, walks etc. I need something stronger. Is it hard to get sleeping pills from the GP?

Have you tried an over the counter sedating antihistamine like nytol or piriton?

Wilma55 · 01/05/2018 06:54

Doctor might give you 7 or 10 but no more as they can be addictive. OH recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and not sleeping but only given short course and prescription specified one off.

It's not hard OP. They will happily prescribe a short course to get you back into a routine (and then this can be extended if needed). It might also be worth talking to them about your anxiety more generally while you're there in case there is more they can do.

Good luck - insomnia is a terrible thing Flowers

I'm a chronic insomniac and have been for years. Our GP will prescribe me a fortnight's worth twice a year when I get desperate. I would never ask more often than that though as I know it would be a no. I haven't asked for a few years now though, not because the sleep is any better I just seem better at managing without sleep instead.

Nytol has Promethazine in I think. You can buy then in the pharmacy.

Or ask them for Promethazine for travel sickness. Comes as 25mg tablets.

It's bloody awful not sleeping OP - long term insomniac experience!

I would first try an OTC remedy like Sominex first - they're basically an antihistamine that makes you drowsy. See how you go on that for a few days. There's also Nytol and a herbal version if you're not keen on chemicals.

If that's no good then yes, see the GP who may prescribe a small dose of sedative like zopiclone. But they may also talk about any anxieties you may have and approach the lack of sleep from a different angle.

At one point I was on a mid dose citalopram, then given 15mg of mirtazapine and 7.5mg zopiclone but to be honest it made me feel so spaced out and a numbed zombie that I gradually came off them.

Now I just kind of learn to live with my insomnia but do take Sominex occasionally when it's too much. That gets me another 2-3 hours sleep a night sometimes.

Good luck - it's horrendous being sleep deprived Thanks

My daughter has been taking Valerian drops with hops in them too, which we got from a health food store. They have made a huge difference to her. I really recommend them.

Get Sominex over the counter, much better than nytol.

Dormeasan is what works for my daughter- Valerian and hops.
