We live in a mid terrace and the walls appear to be very thin. Often can hear neighbour shouting at their daughter, can sometimes hear the radio/tv etc. But the most annoying thing of all is their squeaky door!!!!!!! At all hours of the day and night i can hear my neighbours opening and closing a door upstairs that is incredibly creaky!!! Its so loud it sounds like its in our house. When we moved in i even had to double check it wasnt one of our doors. Its driving me crazy - would i be unreasonable to go and introduce myself to them and give them some WD40 to sort it out? We didnt move in long ago and havent met them yet either!

Amazing.

Can you put special instructions on?

Ontheboardwalk · 30/04/2018 22:13

Go for it!

Can you also send a door handle to my neighbours so they can use it to open and close the front door instead of slamming it shut.

Hearing a creaky door day and night is not acceptable

dingdongdigeridoo · 30/04/2018 22:13

Hah, go for it! I lived next door to some serious chair scrapers. Their kitchen floor must have been wrecked from the constant scraping of furniture. I was always tempted to drop off some rubber chair leg protectors...

SkaPunkPrincess · 30/04/2018 22:16

I'd laugh and use the wd40. I am a good neighbour. As long as your polite and kind about it I don't see why they would have a problem.

something like ' I am ever so sorry to bother you about something so trivial but you have a squeaky door that I can hear through the walls and it's driving me a little bit mad. iv brought some lubricant with me and I'd like to ask if I could lubricate the door hinges to save my own sanity? again im really sorry to be a nuisance.'

Guacamole2506 · 30/04/2018 23:10

Im sat in bed listening to the door nowBlush im not used to living in terraced housing and i really dont like being able to hear my neighbours talking at this time, it makes me feel so uneasy!

Can you please send my back neighbour a bathroom blind.

Their bathroom overlooks our garden and dining room and we can see right into their shower while we are eating and see all the marital “activities” that take place there over our family dinners.
TIA

moofeatures · 30/04/2018 23:15

Please please please do it (and report back)

OohMavis · 30/04/2018 23:17

WD40 is a degreaser, not a lubricant. It'll damage the hinge in the long run.

Send a bottle of oil

Popadoodledoo · 30/04/2018 23:26

Are you next door but 1?

We have the same problem Hmm I may try your tactic

Juiceylucy09 · 30/04/2018 23:48

This as lighthearted?

My neighbour two doors down is a real busy body, she came out on put WD40 all over her adjoining neighbours gate as the squeak was annoying her, I couldn't believe my eyes.

Unless the walls are made of paper YABU.

RulaLenskasHair · 01/05/2018 00:03

Oh my god I have this exact problem!! Mine must not use theirs that often as it's only every few days...

SkaPunkPrincess · 01/05/2018 06:51

oohmavis What are you on about? It is advertised as and is, a lubricant.

Coolaschmoola · 01/05/2018 06:57

SkaPunkPrincess is right. WD40 is a penetrating oil lubricant designed to prevent corrosion and clean.

How would it damage a hinge?

OohMavis · 01/05/2018 07:07

Its main use is a solvent. It's a water displacer; WD. It isn't an oil... Good for cleaning, dissolving rust and temporarily lubricating something if you're in a pinch, but it won't last and sometimes damages the thing you're trying to lubricate in the long run. Cos it's not a true lubricant. It doesn't contain any oil.

OohMavis · 01/05/2018 07:12

Well, according to my retired mechanic dad, anyways. Can't say I'm an expert.

Zebrasinpyjamas · 01/05/2018 07:19

I had the same issue. My neighbours door was squeaky and stuck a bit so every time they slammed it shut our house rocked. It was a great day when they bought a new door! You are not being unreasonable at all.

Etymology23 · 01/05/2018 07:23

I’d imagine ideally you’d want something thicker than WD40, maybe a silicone based lubricant? That way it wouldn’t vanish over time. Wouldn’t want that... then you’d have to post them another bottle...

Chattymummyhere · 01/05/2018 07:28

My neighbour insists on slamming their front door. Apparently it’s broken so you have too. It’s a plastic door installed last year and only needed slamming when they moved in it’s not like it’s wood that’s expanded.

campbellsmum · 01/05/2018 08:37

I definitely would! We live in a mid terrace and my neighbours would be up hammering every night as soon as DS went down to sleep, he's 10 months, and wasn't a great sleeper but we had a breakthrough and then the hammering started so I just went to his door and asked him to stop, explaining about the baby etc (not sure how he didn't know we had a baby but whatever) and he hasn't done it since. I wouldn't hestitate to go round again if he started doing something else to wake him up. We are courteous so expect them to at least try. They do however also slam their door which winds me up lol

ThomasShelbysBunnet · 01/05/2018 08:43

A bottle of 3 in 1 oil will do the job better than wd40 😁
