To think that £7 for two small coffees is a bit much?

This afternoon at a Nespresso cafe in the City.

What upsets me most is the price difference for different sized tea in Starbucks. It's about an extra 15p for each size increase. I know we pay for water, utilities etc. (I work in hospitality myself) but 15p extra for an inch of hot water is a bit of a con.

ImFreeToDoWhatIWant · 02/05/2018 08:11

Unihorn - All that tells you is how over priced the first size is... 😂

BarbaraofSevillle · 02/05/2018 08:14

Small price differences between regular and large are designed to get you to go large because you think you might as well.

It doesn't cost them an extra 15p to give you an extra inch of water so it's just more profit to them.

Unihorn · 02/05/2018 08:16

Well I understand with coffee increases as there is more milk/syrup/beans/whatever crap people put in coffee these days (I only drink tea!) But tea just gets a splash more water, and Starbucks is actually one of the only places that charges for different sizes where Iive.

I live in London and still think 3.50 for a small coffee is expensive. I usually pay 2.50-3 pounds.

crochetmonkey74 · 02/05/2018 08:28

snog I've been stung there too- I had a cappucino in St Marks Square and sat on one of the lovely tables outside people watching- my bill was 26 euros!!!
I saw it as the whole experience not just the coffee (that's what I told myself anyway : 0 )

AhoyDelBoy · 02/05/2018 08:37

I love threads which give me an idea of how much things cost in the UK. I'm in Australia so I did the price conversion. At the current exchange rate that's AU$12.60 for two coffees! YANBU! That's hugely expensive

jellycat1 · 02/05/2018 08:51

Yep it's a lot. Hope it was good!

Adversecamber22 · 02/05/2018 08:58

I'm in the Midlands and my lovely local independent charges 2.50 for a latte. Subway were selling tea and coffee for a quid a few months ago and there is also a baked spud van that sells tea for a pound.

icelollycraving · 02/05/2018 09:02

Average price in London.
I thought Nespresso would be fishing out free coffee to get you to buy. Is there a cafe?

WellTidy · 02/05/2018 09:04

Yes, it is a lot. I live and work in London too.

We went to a garden centre in Kent last weekend. Nice enough garden centre, nothing amazing, but nice enough. The paninis in the café were £8.25 and up. Served with a small side salad. I thought that was a lot for a garden centre, the type of arrangement where you queue up and pay and then they bring food to the table when it is ready.

I didn't have one to be able to say whether it was worth it though!

Furano · 02/05/2018 09:06

Should have gone to Pret.

99p for a black or white filter coffee. 49p if you take your own mug!

ohamIreally · 02/05/2018 15:13

Hi Furano I usually do go to Pret which is why I was shocked I think! The cafe was fabulous however and the cakes looked amazing. I was with a customer and he picked as I was paying but at least I can claim it on expenses.

YANBU. Although you must have had it to pay it.

The ones saying it's reasonable. Are you all millionaires or am I a tight arse

PinkHeart5914 · 02/05/2018 15:29

Even the lovely little coffee shop in my village is £2.75 for a latte or black coffee, so I don’t think £3.50 for london is completely outrageous as you always pay more in a city don’t you.

TroubledLichen · 02/05/2018 15:35

Every time I’ve gone to buy Nespresso pods I’ve been offered a free coffee to try some of the new pods. Yes I’m in the Nespresso club cult, it doesn’t cost anything and I think I ended up as a member as years and years ago you had to join to buy online. There’s no secret handshake for the free coffee though, anyone who looks halfway interested in the pods gets that!

Independents are the worst offenders in my experience though, they usually charge you £5 for an artisan flat white that takes a small ice age to make. Pret is brilliant though, can’t beat a 99p filter coffee and there’s an own cup discount.

sahknowme · 02/05/2018 15:53

I live in London, and think this is way too expensive. In an artisan/independent coffee shop, £3 is my upper limit.

DGRossetti · 02/05/2018 16:11

When I open my artisan independent coffee shop, it will be charged per person per half hour, and you can have as much coffee as you like ...

fussychica · 02/05/2018 16:11

Totally mad. I only have a free coffee from Waitrose if I'm out or failing that one from M&S.

Today at a swanky seafront bar in Spain I paid 1.30 euros for a lovely coffee served with a complimentary slice of cake.Smile

Orangecake123 · 02/05/2018 16:16

£3.50 is pretty steep.

My local chain coffee shop charges £1.50 for a small latte.

baxterboi · 02/05/2018 16:25

That's pricey even for London. I don't buy coffee often but I'm sure the last fairly big one from a chain was a about £2.50, maximum £2.80.
