To understand cultural appropriation and still think this story is a bit ridiculous

The article I am referring to is linked below
Prom dress prompts 'cultural appropriation' row - www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-trending-43947959

I totally understand cultural appropriation and why and how it is offensive to people (although I'm sure some of u will disagree as I've asked the question), I would never dream of blacking up or wearing native American tribal clothes as a fancy dress, I'm also uncomfortable with 'chav and toff' fancy dress. But AIB completely U to think that this girl is just wearing a nice dress to her prom and there's nothing wrong with it?
I'm sure many of her Asian friends wore 'American' dresses to prom (ironically probably made in China!!)

Can you imagine if a white person told a black or Asian person that can't wear something because it's for white people? Wouldn't happen.

LostInShoebiz · 30/04/2018 18:16

The critique on the basis that the dress represents women's liberation for that particular culture is a little bit weak. It's like saying women shouldn't wear trousers lest they be culturally appropriating the women's liberation struggle in the west.

LostInShoebiz · 30/04/2018 18:17

And from a man too! "Women: educate yourself about being a woman" says member of the patriarchy.

Soubriquet · 30/04/2018 18:21

I swear people are getting worse in the world. How on earth is this a problem?

Foslady · 30/04/2018 18:23

Thank God it’s not just me who thought ‘huh?’ I’ll be honest - I don’t get it, I have no problem with anyone wearing any clothing so long as it’s not promoting anger or violence against anyone - if anything I’d think it was great that she wanted to celebrate in a dress that reflects the beauty of the clothing of another culture. Would an Asian girl have been berated for wearing a Weatern style prom gown?

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 30/04/2018 19:25

Seems to be a man bullying a woman over her choice of clothes!

Yes this with knobs on........ (if you pardon the pun.)

SluttyButty · 30/04/2018 19:43

I think I was more horrified watching RHONYC don't judge me with Luanne waltzing into a fancy dress party as Diana Ross. She claims she didn't black herself up but she really did. Now that's appalling behaviour, not a young woman is a lovely dress.

BitchQueen90 · 30/04/2018 19:46

Haha. I'm on Twitter and this bloke is a hypocrite. Tweets of his from January have been dug up of him using the "n" word to describe black people. He can hardly try and take the moral high ground.

TerfsUp · 30/04/2018 19:54

Beautiful girl and lovely dress.

Ohmydayslove · 30/04/2018 20:06

Yes I hope this utter twat and attention seeking tit head of s man is called out in this.

Getting a bit fed up of snowflake men bullying and judging women. It’s getting worse I think.

Surprised that professionally offended dick head Owen Jones hasn’t had a hissy fit and flounced into the fray.

Think I am getting a crabby old bat but I wanted to stand up and cheer Germaine Greer talking to Kirsty Waugh.

Be offended and fuck off.

Andrewofgg · 30/04/2018 20:17

When black musicians play "Western" classical music is that cultural appropriation?

The whole concept is absurd.

SerenDippitty · 30/04/2018 20:22

Would it have been any different if she’d gone to the prom in a sari?

CigarsofthePharoahs · 30/04/2018 20:31

I can remember kimono style necklines being a big thing in fashion during the 00's. Cultural appropriation? Hardly.
I used to have a lovely black top, bought for me from China. I thought it suited me quite well! I didn't for a moment think I was appropriating anything.

It's a very nice dress. She isn't mocking the style, or claiming the design of it. Not appropriation, just a nice dress.

VanGoghsOtherEar · 01/05/2018 20:09

I thought cultural appropriation meant taking a style off a systematically oppressed culture (point 1) and then using it in a mocking way or claiming that their race invented or discovered it (point 2).

This story seems to fail on both these two points IMO. I am not saying Chinese people do not get racist treatment but are they oppressed systematically in the way black people have been in the US, South Africa etc?
