Parent and child parking

What age were your kids when you stopped using parent and child spaces? My youngest was 4 when I stopped, however was astonished to discover my friend still uses them for her DS who is 11. All lighthearted here, not looking for dog’s abuse, but AIBU to think she should park in the main car park now, and leave those spaces for parents with prams etc?Smile

Some places specify age 12 which is when you can stop using a child car seat.

Flomper · 30/04/2018 16:21

Really? Hasnt this topic been flogged to absolute death?

The suoermarket guidelines say 12 and P&C parking spaces are discretionary anyway. Its CF to park in one if you only have a non special needs 11 y old in the car, but there is nothing you can do about it.

FooFighter99 · 30/04/2018 16:21

DD is 6 and I'll continue to use them until DD can open a car door carefully without smashing it into the neighbouring car!! Grin

(I do tell her to wait for me to open the door for her, but sometimes she forgets)

Scotsmum2017 · 30/04/2018 16:22

Good grief flomper calm your pants. As I said I did not ask for dog’s abuse. As it happens I’ve never read other threads regarding this, o

YABU for mentioning this on here. The crazies will.emerge claiming that parent and child spaces are the work of the devil and that everyone parking there without a child is clearly disabled and therefore cannot be questioned on their behaviour etc, etc, etc.

I will stop using when my children can safely strap themselves in and therefore I do not need the extra space on either side to have the doors wide open to reach across and do the seat belts. I don't know when that will be though.

Lethaldrizzle · 30/04/2018 16:24

The ones with the pushchair logo kinda say it for me.

Scotsmum2017 · 30/04/2018 16:24

Obviously not on MN often enough. Was a light hearted question that did not require that rant Flomper Did not realise there was a “MN policing system” in place that deemed whether or not I was allowed to post anything.

Totally irrelevant but what does dogs abuse mean? Never heard of it.

ProseccoPoppy · 30/04/2018 16:27

My local supermarket has pictures including a pushchair and signs that say “we have left more space for pushchairs...spaces reserved for those with children aged under 5” or words to that effect so had assumed up to 5ish was the norm

Scotsmum2017 · 30/04/2018 16:27

Fair point chickenfried already been lombasted for having a thought in my head!! Hmm

what does dogs abuse mean? Never
heard of it.

Really? Bizarre! Maybe it’s a regional thing?

It just means loads of abuse! Not sure where he dogs part comes from
Though?

qu1rky · 30/04/2018 16:29

My kids and 21 and 24 and I still use them.....even when they're not with me WinkGrin

ILikeMyChickenFried · 30/04/2018 16:30

Mumsnet has a very weird perspective on P&C spaces for a parenting website IMO.

19lottie82 · 30/04/2018 16:30

It means verbal abuse

Years ago now but age 5. At Tesco you were given a sticker that went in your window that expired on their 5th birthday.

But the town I live in has no P&C spaces so never really got my moneys worth so to speak.

DuchyDuke · 30/04/2018 16:33

Our local Waitrose has put up signs now to say top priority for P&C is for disabled people.

Flomper · 30/04/2018 16:33

its not abuse to point out that this has been done to death on MN and you must be a very, very new user if you've never seen a thread about it before.

Scotsmum2017 · 30/04/2018 16:34

Lol! The dog’s abuse comment made me laugh!! Yes, that is what it means, must be regional right enough! Grin

Sorry to upset the whole of MN, by asking what I thought was a “harmless question”, lesson learned, #taboo topic....P&C Spaces.....Grin

I noticed Tesco said "use for under 5s" the other day. On a sign, in their car park, Hammersmith, London. So was pretty clear

Sparklingbrook · 30/04/2018 16:36

I have never seen a thread about P&C parking as straightforward as this TBH. An actual basic question.

Usually they at least have reports of a slanging match in the car park and the self appointed car park police patrolling the spaces instead of getting on with their shopping. Grin

Spikeyball · 30/04/2018 16:38

I sometimes use them with my 12 year old who has sn. He currently has a bb but sometimes the p and c spaces are in a safer position for him.

Flomper · 30/04/2018 16:39

also why focus on people being a bit cheeky using them with a NT 11y old, what about all the other fuckers that havent even got a kid in the car?

Andrewofgg · 30/04/2018 17:21

YABU for not providing popcorn

blackteasplease · 30/04/2018 17:24

I felt them unnecessary from about 3/4 for my two but I think up to 5 is reasonable.

If the rule is 12, or if mn thinks they should exist so be it but I feel they should be for preschool I.e. bolting age

blackteasplease · 30/04/2018 17:26

I love the expression the dogs abuse and will use it from now on.

although I'm not sure what the RSPCA/ dog lovers would think about normalising abuse of dogs!
