Would you vaccinate in these circumstances

Having a discussion with dp regarding private chicken pox vaccine. Our DD is almost 10 and still hasn't had chickenpox. She's definitely been exposed to the virus as many children in her class at school have had it. At what age would you consider having her vaccinated privately if she still hasn't caught it naturally? I don't want her to get really unwell with it when she is older, get shingles or be at risk when pregnant in the future, etc. Dp is a bit more laid back than me and says she's probably immune but I would rather be sure and immunise if she still hasn't caught it by her teen years.

Can you have her blood tested for her titre levels to see if she is immune

StealthPolarBear · 30/04/2018 14:26

Can you not ask for her immunity to be tested? I did when pregnant with dd as mum thought I'd not had it. I was immune.

Bodicea · 30/04/2018 14:28

You can be tested for immunity. I was when I was exposed when I was pregnant.
If she isn’t I would definately pay to vaccinate. I don’t see the point in getting a horrible illness when it is preventable.

MyNameIsTotoro · 30/04/2018 14:30

Gosh that's a hard one. I would usually say don't vaccinate against CP but I can see why you're considering it.

A good resource regarding all vaccines is the department of health green book. This is what health professionals refer to. If you google "green book chicken pox" then the chapter should come up. It may be helpful.

I'd discuss with your GP personally who may be able to seek more specialist advice from colleagues in health protection.

SluttyButty · 30/04/2018 14:33

I'd like to know this. DS is nearly 13 and still not had it. I got it at 16 and my dad at the same time at 40 and we were both quite poorly.
I'm on immunosuppressants so if I can avoid him getting it now then I would.

Sofabitch · 30/04/2018 14:36

It could be that she got it and you didnt notice. I only got 6 spots and all bar one of my children had barely enough spots to notice.

You can pay to check if she has antibodies

Barbaro · 30/04/2018 14:37

Get her tested for immunity. If not immune, vaccinate.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 30/04/2018 14:49

I would. I had it at 15 and it was awful, I was absolutely covered in spots and they left visible scarring all over my body, including on my face.

GinaLinetti99 · 30/04/2018 14:53

I would get her vaccinated, or at least have her immunity checked.

I didn't get chicken pox until I was in my twenties and it was shite. My parents assumed I had immunity as I'd been exposed, but I didn't. I accepted what they said without questioning it (fool!) and suffered the consequences.

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 30/04/2018 14:59

Definitely get immunity tested I'd say. I was vaccinated last year at age 30 - I had assumed I was immune but it turned out not to be the case! I had both the immunity test and the vaccine at CityDoc.

lljkk · 30/04/2018 15:02

No I wouldn't... but then I had CP as an adult & it was a completely non-event. I wasn't all ill. One of my DC was quite feverish & miserable with it; another one was mildly miserable, the other 2 DC were not at all ill with their CP. So my anecdata is "Meh".

AlbusPercival · 30/04/2018 15:10

I would have her vaccinated but then I have had my 18 month old vaccinated

DuchyDuke · 30/04/2018 15:13

I would vaccinate her as catching it now could lead to scarring for life & when she’s older ensure she gets her antibodies checked regularly and if necessary top it up. Getting CP while pregnant is as disasterous as Rubella.

LouBakesCakes · 30/04/2018 15:14

We got both our DC vaccinated. I think first at 18 months, second at 2 years.

DaveyouareanuttertwatDave · 30/04/2018 18:59

Thank you all. Didn't realise you could get tested for immunity so we'll try that and see where we go from there. Many thanks

I would (or at least get tested for immunity). I was umming and ahhing for ds (he got when he was 3) but was would have def got it if he hadn't had it by end of primary. It can be really nasty as an adult (esp for an adult male) and not great if you get it when pregnant.
