Holland & Barret are a rip off who cynically rip of old people....

I have a mild ailment at the moment and my friend suggested trying a certain product. I went into Holland & Barret and I was shocked at how expensive it was. When I checked out the rest of their products, I saw it was the same all over.

I saw the same product online, much cheaper. Basically, they charge so much because they believe old people won't get online and search out better deals.

I think you're coming across as a bit ageist OP - like you think all old people are thick luddites or something.

Birdsgottafly · 30/04/2018 15:13

"No seriously, stuff I've seen in other shops is much cheaper than H and B"

I feel exactly the same when I look at, Debenhams, Currys, John Lewis, Waitrose, the Disney Shop and lots of other places I won't shop in.

I shop in H&B, for some concentrations and pill size, they aren't more expensive. For anyone on other Meds, unless you can buy the same brand, you might not know what's in it. I can take something I've bought from H&M to my Specialist Nurses and they can tell me exactly, if it's safe.

It used to be my go to place when out and about, when I wanted a (Vegan) snack, or Vegan Chocolate.

I don't want to have to wait for a delivery, or be in to get it. If I want to try out a recipe, I know I can get stuff from there.

I'm happy to pay for the convenience.

Birdsgottafly · 30/04/2018 15:14

Actually thinking about it, elderly people are likely to be on other Meds, so need to be extra careful.

Every time I've shopped in there, i haven't seen an elderly person, though.

MissMorkansAnnualDance · 30/04/2018 15:29

H&B staff are unfailingly helpful.
H&B stuff (if you read the labels) almost always has a higher dosage of whatever "snake oil" you're after. Sure Boots and will be cheaper, but they'll have something like 15% of the active ingredient that H&B will have.
I buy their stuff, only ever on penny sales though.
I buy branded stuff from Boots (only ever on 3x2)

Nothing is a rip-off OP if you don't actually buy it.

MissMorkansAnnualDance · 30/04/2018 15:29

Oh, and yes, you're ageist.

systemlakeland · 30/04/2018 15:41

Registered Dietician springs to mind ...

Hahahahaha 😆

Aw bless. A pompous dietician.

allez · 30/04/2018 16:05

@TatianaLarina

See, as well as being a twat, you obviously haven't understood the different between RD and nutritionist.

getoutofthebath · 30/04/2018 16:14

Anyone else wondering what the hell this product is, and why the OP kept it a secret?!

Bel04 · 30/04/2018 16:15

Some products are very expensive but I have interstitial cystitis (chronic illness) and cannot drink caffeine. I but they're nestle carob 'coffee' for around £2.60 and it lasts a good amount of time and tastes amazing. Only place on the high street that stock it.

getoutofthebath · 30/04/2018 16:18

But what is the product? I neeeeeed to know! Is it something to do with wee?

specialsubject · 30/04/2018 16:19

they are very pricey and last time i checked, they sell homeopathic stuff and diet pills. i dont shop at places that do that, and for my vitamin d ( only supplement i need as i am in good health and eat properly) i can buy at b and m!

allez · 30/04/2018 16:29

@specialsubject

Ironically, because you sound smart, Vitamin D medication is quite controversial.

maxthemartian · 30/04/2018 16:36

Controversial how? If you're deficient and need to take it, what's the controversy?

allez · 30/04/2018 16:41

I don't have time to reply properly but, dosages and normal levels of Vit D have never been established and several extensive studies show that often it's Vit K which is the issue.

Whilst many (most) over-supplemented subjects just have "expensive piss" (Sheldon Cooper), too much Vit D can have quite negative effects.

It's a complex area but Vit D is fairly unusual insomuch as you can have too much and it's often a plaster over a larger issue.

Seafoodeatit · 30/04/2018 17:08

I buy a few things from there - I like the neals yard snacks and get jars of coconut oil when they're on offer. The penny sale though just brings out the inner cheapsake because it's BOGOF but with a penny charge.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 30/04/2018 17:23

"No seriously, stuff I've seen in other shops is much cheaper than H and B"

Here's a thing I've seen stuff in Tescos cheaper than Waitrose,

I've seen things cheaper in Asda than Sainsbury's (and tbh that's going to get worse I can see sainsburies being the high end shop)

I've seen the same products cheaper in Superdrug than boots, and even cheaper still in savers.

I've exactly the same product as all of these places for just one pound in this marvellous shop called Poundland/pound world.

My point is I'm sure you have seen things for cheaper in other physical shops and Definately on line but what's that got to do with being old

specialsubject · 30/04/2018 18:20

i know all that and it is stated in words of few syllables on the nhs website.

and like anyon e else of reasonable intelligence, i dont expect to get a super exact figure for the right dose or how much uv i should get. but unlike many on here, i do know that uv strength doesnt relate to air temperature.

imweirdandcool · 30/04/2018 18:44

they rip off everyone go on Amazon

TatianaLarina · 30/04/2018 18:47

you obviously haven't understood the different between RD and nutritionist.

I understand it perfectly and I’m still laughing.

TatianaLarina · 30/04/2018 18:47

Very odd assumption btw.

TheSpottedZebra · 30/04/2018 18:51

I'm guessing green lipped mussel extract.

TheSpottedZebra · 30/04/2018 18:53

^ This is utter, utter nonsense. I used to have the joy of working in the vitamin and supplement industry and this statement is just not true.
