Genuinely, is it possible to look good in a swimsuit at almost 50?

Have some weight to lose, but once I have done that, I am probably deluding myself that I could look nice in a swimsuit??

Have seen one I like online, but then thought what is the point Sad.

Sorry to be a downer.

Of course you can! But also, what else would you wear in the water? Or is it just for lounging?

My aunt is nearly 60 and still has the body of a teenager (very jealous).

MinesaPinot · 30/04/2018 13:47

I flaming hope so! I'm 55 and am the heaviest I've been in years. I've just bought a swimsuit by Elle Sport from TK Maxx which is great. Slimming and supportive and not cut too high up the legs. I'm off to Spain for a work trip in a couple of weeks with a party that includes several young slim lovelies from my team. I am proposing wearing said swimsuit together with a strapless maxi for sitting around in and let the Young Things prance around in bits of string that masquerade as swimwear.

Im 60 and wear a bikini. I dont care..

DartfordBridge · 30/04/2018 13:49

Try spinning op!

My 46year old legs look the best they ever have - well since I can remember anyway. Cellulite has VASTLY improved to the point it’s barely noticeable. I go three times a week

Snugglepiggy · 30/04/2018 13:49

As for cellulite.Cheered me up no end watching a YouTube clip of Kylie Minogue the other day.Definitely spotted some cellulite on the back of even her pins!I find a lovely sarong tied round for when I'm wandering around helps, and I'm still relatively slim.I've stopped lamenting the body I had as an eighteen year old,it's never coming back.Neither is the face sadly !

Spray tan, big sunglasses, gleaming hair or big hat. You will look amazing ❤️

bista1 · 30/04/2018 14:19

I would have said no until we went on holiday to a place in France. Every evening the lady in the house next door would come out for a swim, every time a different swimsuit (loads of bikinis), matching jewellery, impeccable deep tan and full make up. I put her age in her mid-seventies. She looked amazing!

TrickyD · 30/04/2018 14:21

Don't be so ridiculous, OP.

I will be 74 by our next holiday.. I have no intention of keeping my body under wraps when we are on a tropical beach. Unlike you I certainly don't look 50, but there are plenty of people who look far worse than me. DH and the family are happy to be seen with me, why bother about anyone else?

We see a lot of indignation about Fat Shaming, let's have a bit less Age Shaming.

Helmetbymidnight · 30/04/2018 14:21

I look nice in a bikini ''tis my best look!
(People with short legs look better in bikinis than all-in-ones, believe me.)

thisishard2 · 30/04/2018 14:31

Thanks all.

I apologise if I have offended anyone. Am just going through a difficult separation and coming out of a marriage where I have had no validation about anything really for years - so that’s my excuse.

Thanks for the various suggestions.

Miraclesuit

Seriously, so good they deserve a medal for services to flabby bits.

They are v expensive but fabulous; I'm a size 14 with big boobs and a tummy and these make me look like Monroe - they're really flattering & stay put. Looked after they last too.

lljkk · 30/04/2018 15:09

Define what "Look good" means. How would I tell?

catkind · 30/04/2018 15:51

Aw OP, I didn't mean that as a put down, just that people at the beach or the pool are busy doing their own thing, not analysing other people's figures, whether they're 20 or 50.

MissWilmottsGhost · 30/04/2018 16:01

Meh. I had cellulite when I was 19 and weighed 7st.

I feel less self conscious in a bikini now in my mid forties than I ever did as a teenager. It's not because I have less cellulite, but simply because I don't give a fuck what other people think now.

I find it quite sad that a mature woman thinks she needs the approval of teens to feel good about herself Sad

Somersetter · 30/04/2018 16:06

My mum looks good in a swimsuit in her 70s. I've never ever seen someone in a swimsuit and thought they should cover up, no matter what age, shape or size they were.

MissWilmottsGhost · 30/04/2018 16:11

Stand up straight and take your glasses off Grin

This is great advice from mavis Smile

Seriously, of course get yourself a nice swimsuit, one not too tight so you feel comfy in it, wrap a sarong around anything you dont want to show, and have yourself a great time.

MatildaTheCat · 30/04/2018 16:14

Liz Hurley manages to look ok.

The rest of us choose the most flattering style for our shape, defuzz, slap on some dove ( possibly) and get on with it. I’m covered in surgical scars and manage to swim at least twice a week. In fact, as a keen swimmer, I like to wear a two piece with high waisted pants as the water to skin encourages me to use my abs properly as I swim freestyle.

I didn’t say that.

I think tankinis look really nice. Add a sarong if it helps you feel better.

mayhew · 30/04/2018 16:57

I bought my first bikini for 30 years last year. Asda! I only tried it on for fun but it looked good.

swingofthings · 30/04/2018 17:03

The best way to look good in a swimming suit is... to do a lot of swimming! Might take a couple of years of 2/3 time a week swimming to get that 'Gosh she looks good for her age' kind of comment though.

expatmigrant · 30/04/2018 17:04

I am 53 and will be out there sunning myself in my bikini next week. Wouldn't even give it a second thought.
I'm reasonably slim but definitely no Elle McPherson Grin
