AIBU to hate being called in for meetings when you don't know what it's about?

My immediate thought is always "Oh my God I'm in trouble"!
Then I panic imagining the work possible scenarios until the meeting happens/ they tell me what it's about.
It's like the work equivalent of "we need to talk"...

just me then?

I hate it too and can I have a word

PimpMyBride · 30/04/2018 13:55

YANBU- I hate it too and I always suspect it's a weird power-play.

Don't sweat it, it'll be fine Grin

Redandwhiteteacher · 30/04/2018 13:55

Yeah me too, I'm a teacher so it usually means that a parent has made an unnecessary complaint.

FrangipaniBlue · 30/04/2018 13:57

Me too and the last time it happened I me I was told I was being made redundant and put on gardening leave with immediate effect Shock

flagnogbagnog · 30/04/2018 13:57

Oh yes I know what you mean! I actually have one of those today. But all staff have been instructed to attend so not just me. All sorts of rumours flying around. I wasn’t remotely worried until I picked up on everyone else’s worry iyswim?

strawberrysparkle · 30/04/2018 13:59

Couldn't agree more!!!

Cliveybaby · 30/04/2018 14:01

Glad I'm not alone then!
It's my head of department (uni) but I have to wait til wednesday now to find out!
My supervisor did this to me a while ago and I was tying myself in knots... turned out she was pregnant!

Frangipani

Redundancy is shite but GARDENING LEAVE

Cliveybaby · 30/04/2018 14:04

Aw sorry @FrangipaniBlue
That's what I'm afraid of to be honest...

OP posts:
FrangipaniBlue · 30/04/2018 14:27

@Trooperslane2 @Cliveybaby it was a while ago and not a bad thing coz they had to pay me three months notice in lieu plus a severance package Grin

(Which I then used to start my own company, so win-win!)

CaffeineAndCrochet · 30/04/2018 14:29

Every single time. 'Oh god, I'm going to be fired!' and then usually it's a new project or my supervisor is going to be off for a while and wanted to tell me in person.

FrangipaniBlue · 30/04/2018 14:32

I'm a person who believes everything happens for a reason, I've been made redundant twice and both times I can't out of it in terms of career/opportunities in a better than I was before.....

Don't think the worst @Cliveybaby because I've been called in for "a talk" that's turned out to be nothing I needed to worry about the person concerned was just a drama llama!! (This person used to do this regularly instead of just arranging meeting like a bloody normal person Hmm)

FrangipaniBlue · 30/04/2018 14:32

and ones like @CaffeineAndCrochet that turned out to be me being given an opportunity!

BevBrook · 30/04/2018 14:33

Back in the early 2000s the company I worked for was getting smaller and smaller as groups of people kept getting called for "meetings" and made redundant. Me and my mate were called for a meeting one day and thought "well, that's it". We popped into the toilet on the way to apply some confidence boosting lippy and went to learn our fate. We were told...the whole department was being made redundant except us!

I'm not sure this was better as we then suffered a pay and promotion freeze for about five years and I was stuck in that company much longer than I would have wanted....

Peterrabbitscarrots · 30/04/2018 14:40

If I get asked to a meeting by email, I always ask for an agenda in advance. Obviously they could decline but that would be a bit petty

Cliveybaby · 30/04/2018 14:42

Eugh I know I just have a vivid imagination... I need to chill

It's probably nothing... I'm pretty much one of hte lowest members of staff but I have a very specific job and I do it well. Also out of probation so can't really be fired...
It's probably something like they've found a little job nobody wants and have decided to foist it off on me.

I just hate when people do this! How hard would it be to say "can we meet to discuss xxx"

Cliveybaby · 30/04/2018 16:52

I cracked and emailed to ask what it's about :S Can't possibly wait 2 days

paddypants13 · 30/04/2018 17:04

Oh God I hate this. My old boss was constantly calling me into meeting rooms. "CanI just borrow you for a minute?" Angry Most of the time whatever was said could have been said in front of colleagues.

I complained in the end. People began to notice and it was embarrassing because they always thought I was getting a bollocking!

Cliveybaby · 30/04/2018 17:20

Wish I hadn't emailed now... he replied (mercifully quickly lol) and it's just some possible extra teaching for next year!
... and I look like a prat!

OP posts:
PumpkinPie2016 · 30/04/2018 17:46

What a relief for you though! Maybe in future he will think to tell people what the meeting is about!

I hate it when people do this - really no need as it just causes worry.

Cliveybaby · 30/04/2018 18:13

true :) at least I'm not in trouble!
I blame having a very scary headmaster at school! Being "sent to the headmaster" was a terrifying prospect (and I wasn't naughty at all!)

divadee · 30/04/2018 18:35

I feel your pain. I have this exact thing tomorrow morning. I won't sleep well tonight and be in a foul mood then for the meeting so it's very counter productive.

FrangipaniBlue · 30/04/2018 19:41

Bosses don't usually give 2 days notice for a bollocking, glad it turned out to be nothing for you OP Smile

Cliveybaby · 30/04/2018 20:09

Haha good point @FrangipaniBlue, although the PA wanted a meeting tomorrow but I was busy... maybe 1 day notice lol?
