To have a day of pay deducted??

I'm panicking I've had a full day of pay deducted when I thought it was only suppose to be half a day. I've emailed the manager to query. But if it is a mistake I have a feeling they will correct it next month.

To me it's alot of money they have taken and I'm a single parent so only 1 Income. I tried so hard not to go home but the office office could see how ill I was. I asked if I could take the next day as holiday and a different manager agreed. I then got told by my manager in not allowed to do this as he knew I was ill and cant use any holiday if im sick. My D'S picks everything up at nursery and im trying my hardest.

Sorry I know this isn't really a AIBU just thought this was the best place to post.

How many days didn't you work?from your OP it sounds like half of one day then not the next full day? In which case them deducting 1 day and not 1.5 seems reasonably generous

They can't stop you using holiday when you are sick. How many hours did you work that day?

stripesandspots10 · 30/04/2018 06:58

Me and my manager both agreed on half day sickness. And then I put down 1 day holiday for the next day which he weren't happy about but said ok but next time you can't do that. I personally thought I could use my holiday as I wished? I very much doubt I'll be going on any holiday this year anyway!

Whatshallidonowpeople My place of work don’t allow holidays over periods of sick

topcat2014 · 30/04/2018 07:00

I get where Dancingmonkey87 is going, employers wish to monitor sickness - and 'covering' it with holiday distorts figures.

However, if you only have SSP in place, they should allow you to take the time as holiday instead so that you don't lose money.

ShatnersBassoon · 30/04/2018 07:01

They can stop you using holiday to cover sick leave just as they can refuse a request for holiday at any time, if it's inconvenient for the business.

What would you have done if they hadn't initially agreed to the holiday leave?

stripesandspots10 · 30/04/2018 07:10

I guess I would have had to had crawled into work and just sat at my desk not doing much. Because a day and a half of sickness would have screwed me over.

Don't panic - look at where you can make savings. Eg - if you travel to work daily by public transport look at getting a month season ticket - it works out cheaper (even if you work 4 days a week it's usually cheaper)

Do yourself a packed lunch and forgo any takeout coffees (or have one every other day/twice a week).

Also check if the company has a sick pay scheme (rather than SSP) otherwise taking anything less than 5 sick days will always mean a shortfall which surely can't be right?

You shouldn't use your holiday for covering sickness, your manager is right about that. Your holidays are a stat entitlement for you to get s break from work and recharge your batteries. Using it to cover sickness means you're not getting your full holiday entitlement and are likely to get ill/stressed and take sick leave. Also, you are skewing your employers sick leave figures......they need to monitor this so they can make changes/ put schemes in place to help and support employees- they can't do this if they don't have a true representation of days lost through sickness

“I guess I would have had to had crawled into work and just sat at my desk not doing much.”

You can understand why they wouldn’t allow you to do that, essentially paying you for not working and potentially infecting others?
