I'm not enjoying my holiday.

First family holiday with our 2yo dd 1 week away in a fairly chilled part of Spain. Husband booked it. Hotel not child friendly we are self catering in a bedroom.. No lounge area no kitchenette not even a kettle!

No evening entertainment or other guests in the hotel. Majority of tourists are German so feeling a bit isolated. Getting dirty looks from locals if we dare go for a quiet drink in one of the local pubs or bars so each night we are stuck on the balcony while we wait for dd to fall asleep.. also its unusually cold here at the moment had a bit of nice weather but it's very windy. I know I should be grateful to go on holiday but there's no fun to be had here it sucks and ita BORING!! early flight home will coat in excess of £300 so not really an option got 3 days left and I'm feeling thoroughly miserable... any advice. Please be gentle I've had a rough few days dd is playing up and being sugar nearly every where we go oh and she's frightened of the sand. All there is to do is walk up and down the same strip of shops and bars day after day can't even find a boat trip or anything.

I don't understand - how are you self-catering in a hotel bedroom? And what do you mean about dirty looks? Spanish kids stay up late so I can't imagine you're being judged for that.

Where are you? Maybe we can find you some things to do.

DuchyDuke · 29/04/2018 21:53

If there are locals then there are local shops / mercados. Hire a taxi, go there, and stock up on food you can easily make in your room.

  1. Plain Rice noodles can be cooked simply by soaking in boiled water. With a bit of salt and pepper can make a filling meal for dd.
  1. Buy cereals, long life milk, tinned food can be eaten straight out of the can.
  1. Buy bread from the bakery; some serrano / parma ham, cheese; vegetables that can be boiled in the kettle (carrots / peas etc).
kaytee87 · 29/04/2018 21:54

Why are you getting dirty looks?

QuiteLikely5 · 29/04/2018 21:54

That doesn’t sound like much fun. You do get what you pay for though.

Just think you’ll never make this mistake again

I would ignore the stares and still go for a few drinks etc

DownInTheDumps1 · 29/04/2018 21:55

I assume it's room only rather than SC?

Reythelastjedi · 29/04/2018 21:56

Oh you poor thing. You sound like you just want to go home. Is there anywhere nearby you could go, maybe a trip somewhere for the day? To be honest, I'd stick it out for 3 days. But I feel your pain. It's hard holidaying with a toddler.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 29/04/2018 21:56

What sort of things did you plan to do when you booked the holiday? I try to do a bit of research on the area so I know what activities will be available. Is there a bus you can get to somewhere more lively, or can you hire a car and explore?

Average temperatures for Spain in April aren’t that great anyway according to Google so sorry that it’s colder than expected - it can’t be any warmer than here, which must be miserable on holiday.

leccybill · 29/04/2018 21:57

Plain rice noodles doesn't sound like much of a holiday meal, sorry.
I'd come home tbh.

Highhorse1981 · 29/04/2018 21:57

How odd!

Did you do any research before this hol?

Dirty looks? Doubt it. Unless you’re not giving the full story

Nothing to do but walk up and dish the strip. Really?

Polkadots72 · 29/04/2018 21:59

The hotel we are in isn't a resort. I dont have access to anything like Plates or bowls I dont have access to boiling water either. The only cup in this room is the once you use when you brush your teeth. It's awful.

I thought the same about the Spanish children but no honestly we have had some really nasty looks. We are in can pastilla.

I remember going to Majorca when my daughter was 2. It was awful. She just kept eating sand. You have my sympathies.

IJustLostTheGame · 29/04/2018 22:01

That sounds awful

RLOU88 · 29/04/2018 22:02

I don’t think you are self catering in a bedroom, just sounds as though your husband booked room only. Unfortunately as PP has said, you get what you pay for.
What area of Spain are you in? My mum lives there and it’s quiet hot this week but she is near Malaga.

y0rkier0se · 29/04/2018 22:04

May I ask what hotel you’re in? We’re booked to go to Can Pastilla in August and now fretting!

Fruitcorner123 · 29/04/2018 22:05

Husband booked it

Next time don't just blindly follow where he leads, do some bloody research. In most cases the mother of a toddler is better able to anticipate what the toddler might need while away (I know that isn't always true)

If it's a hotel isn't there a restaurant? Do you have breakfast included?

Sorry you are having a horrible time OP. Not tryjng to be mean. Can you get some wine in and some playing cards and make your balcony based evenings more enjoyable?

leccybill · 29/04/2018 22:06

Majorca, near the airport? You've been into Palma I take it? I believe there's an aquarium nearby too.
Could you hire a car and get out and about?

Polkadots72 · 29/04/2018 22:07

It probably was room only you know. I didn't book so don't have a clue.

What on earth would we be going where I wouldn't be giving the whole story for goodness sake.. yes dh and i are trying to sniff lines of coke off the table with dd in the pram and we are getting really narked with the filthy looks we keep getting Hmm we have honestly only ever walked 5 mins up the road to get a drink in the evening and each time we have left within 20 mins because we have been made to feel uncomftable.. I'm sorry to get snappy but I wish there was some exciting layer to this holiday I wasn't telling you all about but sadly nope!

Believe it or not dh and i have actually been here before a few years ago now though and we really enjoyed it. Different hotel though again not child friendly but this was before dd was born.

DuchyDuke · 29/04/2018 22:08

@fruitcorner -the father of the toddler should take responsibility too. It’s no good blaming OP!

Fruitcorner123 · 29/04/2018 22:08

Good point leccybill Palma is lovely

Also surely you are at least having nice days? There's a beach there and do you have access to a pool?

Crispbutty · 29/04/2018 22:08

www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g580295-d7270089-Reviews-Tomy_Burguer-Can_Pastilla_Majorca_Balearic_Islands.html?m=19905 This place is near you and looks friendly and for tourists :)

LoniceraJaponica · 29/04/2018 22:09

"we are self catering in a bedroom"

Why?
Why aren't you eating in the hotel dining room? Did your husband book room only? Can't you do half board and add it to your room bill?

What research did you do before going?
Can Pastilla is a beach resort, and if the weather isn't great it must be pretty depressing. Can you travel into Palma for a bit of sightseeing?

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 29/04/2018 22:09

Can you go out for meals? Obviously don't want to generalise but we have been to Spain lots and always found the folk in restaurants and bars very welcoming towards children

Polkadots72 · 29/04/2018 22:10

We did the aquarium which we enjoyed but dd wasn't interested.

OP posts:
DuchyDuke · 29/04/2018 22:10

Majorca is great for kids though! Can’t you Google or Tripadvisor your location for suggestions?
