New turf and the dog...

We've had our lawn turfed about 4 days ago and they advised to keep off it for 3 weeks and that we should keep the dog off it too.

I'm on my own tonight as DP is away for work and I have 2 LOs asleep upstairs so I cannot take the dog out for a walk. She usually goes out about 9.30pm for her last wee etc and I'm not sure what to do.

Will it be bad if I just let her out into the garden for 5mins so she can do what she needs to do?

Hopeful bump...

Of course you should let her out.

Sparklesocks · 29/04/2018 21:31

Can you just take her out the front instead maybe?

felicitythemangyfox · 29/04/2018 21:34

Christ, for a moment I thought this was a trans thread.

Does she do the excited scratching thing after she has a wee? If not I'd just let her out.

Long term how about training her to go on a particular spot?

Titsywoo · 29/04/2018 21:35

Her wee will burn the grass. But that's going to happen anyway so be prepared! I'd take her out the front as the weight of her will damage the grass and stop it rooting properly.

Floralnomad · 29/04/2018 21:36

Do you not have a patio area that you could take her out on a lead , if not take her to the front garden and leave the door ajar .

evergreen7 · 29/04/2018 21:40

There is no front garden you pretty much step out onto a road so that's not an option.

Also no patio.

She doesn't do the scratchy thing after a wee. How badly could she damage it with her wee? It's a genuine question as I really don't know.
She's only a little dog 7/8kgs so I can't imagine her weight making a huge impact?

Take her out on the lead so you know exactly where she goes and run water over it afterwards from the hose or a watering can. That should limit the damage, I would have thought?

MatildaTheCat · 29/04/2018 21:47

I’ve recently had mine done. They said no problem letting the dog out but to avoid walking on it for at least three weeks.

It’s taken really well and growing like fury but unfortunately I do already have some brown patches from the wee but that would always have happened.

If you want to avoid the brown patches then try to take dog somewhere else for the first wee of the day but other than that ( which I could) relax and take heartbthat this relentless rain has some benefit.

MatildaTheCat · 29/04/2018 21:48

Sorry, which I couldn’t.

Adarajames · 29/04/2018 21:56

It's likely raining or about to rain which will wash the grass off so I wouldnt worry too much about it

Adarajames · 29/04/2018 21:58

Ive had dozen of dogs (foster for rescues) and never had a problem of their urine burning the grass, nor with my own 3

snotato · 29/04/2018 22:00

I have a large English bull terrier. After we got our lawn re-turfed she went on it quite a few times in the first couple of days and didn’t do any damage. I’m sure your dog won’t either.
I don’t know if the people who turfed your lawn told you this, but you have to keep newly turfed lawns quite moist. I gave mine a good soaking with the hose morning and night for a couple of weeks.

evergreen7 · 29/04/2018 22:06

@snotato they talked about watering it etc which I did again tonight with the help of an overexcited 3yo said to keep off it and told me to keep the dog off too when I asked about it.

Could they have said it as there's a risk of dogs digging it up? (Mines not into digging TBH)
And they've also said to chase off any cats if we spot them on the lawn - neighbours have some...

I can recommend volcanic rocks you put in dogs drinking water stops dog wee turning the grass yellow.

Titsywoo · 29/04/2018 22:48

Bitches are worse for burning the grass with their wee. I tried the rocks but they didn't work. Several brown patches on my lawn although the areas around them are incredibly lush and green from the nitrogen in the pee! If you can teach her to go in one place i would. My bulldog is too old and stubborn Grin

Anewhope · 29/04/2018 22:59

I've just faced this EXACT dilemma. I let her out. We now have two patches on our brand new grass from her wee. I'm gutted. I even tried diluting it down after every wee with the hosepipe. No luck. Also, be very very quick picking up poo too, I've noticed today when I picked up a few that had been there a couple of days that the grass underneath was dying.
