What's better: an AS-Level, grade A or an A-Level, grade E?

We are disagreeing about which is better for a CV.

Thanks.

Neither are great. I think I'd omit them both from the CV

TheOriginalEmu · 29/04/2018 19:51

If i had to pick, the AS.

TheOriginalEmu · 29/04/2018 19:52

Buntyll.....whats 'not great' about a grade A???

Efrig · 29/04/2018 19:52

AS level grade A

Grade E anything isn’t good tbh

yoyo1234 · 29/04/2018 19:53

I would say an AS grade A . However it may depend on how many other A levels you have and if the job asks for an A level in that area.

Ishouldntbesolucky · 29/04/2018 19:54

AS Grade A surely!

yoyo1234 · 29/04/2018 19:55

PS I don't think you can get higher than A at AS level Grin

LilacBearberry · 29/04/2018 19:56

I won't be leaving it off the CV, it's something I worked for. I don't have any others, as I'm starting an access course, but I'm just wondering which is better to have 'known'. The AS-Level in an A or the A-Level in an E.

Although technically requiring no more marks (at least until a couple of years ago) the grade E at A level looks poorer than the grade A at AS as it would appear the marks had come from double the number of units.

LilacBearberry · 29/04/2018 19:57

I didn't think it was obvious as the AS in A made up the A-Level Grin I just got a U in the A2 year.

OP posts:
LondonGin · 29/04/2018 19:57

Why not put:

3x A Levels A-C business, biology, etc

LondonGin · 29/04/2018 19:58

How long ago did you do them? If it was more than 5 years ago, your more recent experience will be more important

LilacBearberry · 29/04/2018 20:01

I did it last year! :)

OP posts:
Omgwtfbbq · 29/04/2018 20:03

Any mitigating circumstances? You could put (obtained A in first year but did poorly in A2 year due to X)?

Glumglowworm · 29/04/2018 20:03

I’d probably go with the grade A at AS level, purely because an A looks better than an E even if the value is the same

PersianCatLady · 29/04/2018 20:05

As far as i recall, when you apply for uni, you have to declare the U grade on your UCAS form.

Angharad07 · 29/04/2018 20:10

I’d definitely put A at AS level. However, you can only do that if you didn’t go on to do the second year and get an A-level. If you’re talking about a subject where you got an AS level grade A then went on to get an E in your overall A-level in that subject then you have to declare the whole completed course grade, I.e. the E.

Snapespeare · 29/04/2018 20:11

My son got 2 x grade E on his 2 A levels last year with recently diagnosed adhd, a last minute speech and language assessment and with 4 hours of tuition a week grudgingly scraped from a penny- pinching local authority.

His E is an A* for any mainstream educated child without his learning difficulties and disabilities.

So you can bugger the fuck off with your ‘not great’ and ‘isn’t good.’ I am just as proud of him as your A*ers.

LilacBearberry · 29/04/2018 20:15

I know you have to declare it for UCAS, etc.

But this is literally just for an internship.

If you're applying for Access, then it's likely the other students won't have any A levels or may have similar grades. It's useful for staff to know how far through the education system you have been before and the E does show that you persevered for the full 2 years which is good! Will you be having an interview? You could mention then that the AS went well but due to circumstances your final grade was lower than expected.

BuntyII · 29/04/2018 21:02

@TheOriginalEmu putting an AS level on its own isn't great, not the grade. I'd be wondering what happened to the other half.

newbowls · 29/04/2018 21:09

Is the AS A actually a valid qualification in itself? (I know it was when I did A-levels but thought that had changed).

ShinyMe · 29/04/2018 21:14

Lots of people do several AS courses and then fewer full A2s. I'd just put AS (Subject) and A Level (Subject) and not mention the grades. Very few employers are going to care about the actual grades, unless you've literally just left school and the subjects are relevant.
If you're applying for Access then put both and the grades as they are relevant, and together are a lot more than many access applicants have (I work in FE).
