Asking for wage increase

I'm severely under paid for the job I do.

It's a very important role to the company and it's quite specialised.

The industry average is around £6-7k more than I earn. I've been in my role for 3 years and not had a salary review since 2 years ago.

I worked full time until I went on maternity leave, I have now returned 24 hours a week and I am the only person in that role. I am juggling a full time role, on my own in just 3 days per week.

AIBU to ask for a rise? How do I go about doing it? Am I even allowed to do this as an employee or will I be highly inappropriate?

I don't know how to tackle it with!!

Do others do the role in your company? How are you bench marking your pay?

foodgloriousfood1 · 29/04/2018 17:40

Also especially nervous as I've just returned to work 2 months ago from maternity

No, I'm part of a wider department who is made up of around 4 staff members, but my role is exclusive to me and I report to a board member.

I've done extensive research on job sites within the region etc

Ok so start there. Compile a list of all the tasks you undertake and compare it with job profiles locally which pay more, use this evidence to ask for a pay review x

foodgloriousfood1 · 29/04/2018 17:48

Oh I like that idea! Thank you x

Write down your responsibilities and mark them again industry standard, explaining why you need to be paid more to match.

Are you responsible for any staff? Always a good one.

Are there any qualifications you could do in increase your value to the company?

foodgloriousfood1 · 29/04/2018 17:53

I've actually already done a very niche qualification which is very specific to my role.

I wouldn't have even thought of mentioning that. Thanks

Would the board member be prepared to support you? If so go to him with a business plan of how the extra salary increase will benefit him. Offer to take more responsibility etc and start at a negotiation point of 11k increase. Let him negotiate down.

DuchyDuke · 29/04/2018 18:00

I got a 20 grand pay increase doing this btw and so know it works.

foodgloriousfood1 · 29/04/2018 18:44

I think I'd get laughed at if I asked for that high an increase!

You never know. I started at 20k increase as I thought I’d be shot down but the board member signed it off without pushing back.
