To tell all migraine sufferers about this

Posting here because of sheer numbers.

My DD has a long term illness which requires medication to manage. Unfortunately, the medication causes migraines so she hasn't been able to take it as effectively as she might otherwise.

In her last appointment with the pain clinic at the hospital, one of the doctors suggested getting her daith pierced to stop the migraines. I was very sceptical about how having a ring put in a crease of your ear would do anything for a migraine but since my DD had a school attendance of less than 75% in the previous term, I was willing to try.

Have to say it has been the best decision we ever made and has completely stopped the migraines even when her medication was increased.

Just wanted to put this out there for any sufferers, as I've been informed it works in about 85% of cases. Hope this is useful to someone.

Also for migraine pain relief 3 dispersible aspirin in full fat coke works wonders if taken towards the start. Better than migraleve and imigran. This was a tip told by a neurologist.

lanbury · 29/04/2018 17:34

Cranial osteopathy really helped DS

Zeb81 · 29/04/2018 17:34

It works for some and not for all, it is a piercing through a pressure point. Acupressure or acupuncture may also help. Like all migraine sufferers with different triggers and symptoms the treatment will vary.
I have mine pierced and have had a reduction in my migraines however I know my triggers and manage these also as best as I can.

Grilledaubergines · 29/04/2018 17:36

I went to get a faith piercing for migraine and he poo-pooed the idea and refused to do it! Will get it done elsewhere though at some point. Everything is worth trying.

Grilledaubergines · 29/04/2018 17:37

Or daith!

SluttyButty · 29/04/2018 17:37

My dd's ears are the wrong shape so they refused to do it. Not everyone can have it done. She takes beta blockers instead.

JenBarber · 29/04/2018 17:39

I have my daith pierced. It has reduced my migraines considerably.

TittyFahLaEtcetera · 29/04/2018 17:39

I have my daith pierced. Still sitting here with a low grade migraine that's been bubbling away for 2 days now. Although they have reduced in frequency since I got it.

I also take beta blockers, magnesium, CBD oil and Rizatriptan.

categed · 29/04/2018 17:39

You can also massage the area to help with migraines although it has the opposite effect for me and makes me feel sick and dizzy 🤔

ShmooBooMoo · 29/04/2018 17:42

Does a doctor have to do it OP? Thanks

Angelicinnocent · 29/04/2018 17:55

I'm not a doctor so am just repeating what I've heard and what the effect has been on my DD. Sorry it hasn't worked for some or has only had a small effect.

As a pp said, anything is worth trying and some other suggestions on here may help people too so that's good.

@shmoo no the doctor didn't do it. We went to a reputable body art shop. We were advised by doctor not to let anyone do it with a piercing gun as that can shatter the cartilage.

Angel it's also worth bearing in mind that when they wouldn't do my daughters due to ear size/shape, we went to a reputable place. They refused because it would have massive healing problems. I was very grateful they were honest and didn't want to just grab our money.

Angelicinnocent · 29/04/2018 18:07

Very true slutty.

I haven’t seen any particularly convincing studies backing this up. There’s a lot of anecdote out there though.

RhubarbYoghurt · 29/04/2018 18:12

I'm on topiramate and it's helping me massively

PersonalClown · 29/04/2018 20:27

I had my daith done almost a year ago. Did nothing.

My studio were doing them but were being very clear that there was no evidence about any pressure point etc.

I have some piercings anyway so it was just another to add to the collection.

fantasmasgoria1 · 29/04/2018 20:39

I have had it done a month ago for this reason. I have had one migraine since so I don’t think it has worked!

CatsCatsCats11 · 29/04/2018 20:42

I've had mine done, it's deffinately reduced the frequency and intensity of mine (she says sat here with one simmering all weekend). It's been amazing I'm off meds because of it.

applesisapple5 · 29/04/2018 20:43

Daft question, does it matter what side you get pierced?
I would assume that massaging the point would have the same effect, or maybe a better effect, as surely once it's actually pierced it's just... always there?
85% seems like a ridiculously high success rate, I've read much lower figures TBH but worth a try eh?!

Lunaballoon · 29/04/2018 20:43

What and where is a daith?

sweetkitty · 29/04/2018 20:43

Has it done two years ago did nothing

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 29/04/2018 20:45

Its rubbish had it done years ago and didn't work. Only thing that has ever helped me is botox

evilharpy · 29/04/2018 20:49

I suffered with migraines until I got pregnant in March 2014. Haven't had a migraine since. touch all the wooden objects I can find However I do suffer from frequent, quite bad headaches (have had eyes tested etc) and wonder if a daith piercing would help with those.

PurpleDaisies · 29/04/2018 20:51

85% seems like a ridiculously high success rate

I agree. Where is that figure from op?

CheshireChat · 29/04/2018 21:03

I was sure this thread will be about daith piercings. I wanted one just for the look of it and that's all you hear about it!

To the PP- that asked it's an ear piercing
