To get upset when clothes don't fit

Morning lady's, ☕️

AIBU when I go into a shop and try on a size 14 and it doesn't fit, but go into another shop and it does?
Doesn't this make clothes shopping so hard? Admittedly I've been mostly a 12 but am now a 14 edging a 16 which I'm desperately trying to loose.
It's just so frustrating! Clothes never look right on me, they're always to big in one area or too tight in unflattering areas... anyone else have this problem, or is just me?

I do always get the bigger size in the end, but wish I could buy something and then BAM it looks great! Wishful thinking 🙄

Yes it's really annoying and a very common complaint I think for women. It's ridiculous that sizing isn't standard. A man can go into a shop knowing his waist measurement and leg length, pick up a pair of jeans and buy without trying on. I try to buy jeans and discover a 12 in one shop fits and a 14 in another won't go past my hips!

Bluntness100 · 29/04/2018 11:03

I suspect part of it is adjusting to how you look when you're a bit bigger. I know if I gain weight I'm disappointed about how clothes look and when I lose it they miraculously look good again.

Yes, sizes vary between shops, but that also happens whether you're a size eight or an eighteen.

narlagirlxox · 29/04/2018 11:04

Yes! Some shops a 14 looks great, and then in others a 14 won't go over my bottom! I feel like "well what size am I then??"

its because you are not a clothes size. Youre a person and clothes sizing is not standard. You just have to try clothes on and usually most people will fit into a rough range of about 3 sizes

CocoPuffsInGodMode · 29/04/2018 11:10

I don't know why shops do this, I mean surely standardized sizing would be to their benefit. I can't be the only person who gets fed up and decides "ah, you know what I don't need new jeans/skirt this badly" and pisses off home without buying anything? I don't get it, inches are inches, centimeters are centimeters, they're not "alternative facts" ffs!

@CocoPuffsInGodMode

"ah, you know what I don't need new jeans/skirt this badly" and pisses off home

That made me laugh, I do it all the time! Sometimes I cry others I just have a glass of wine or 2 or 3 and pretend I don't have such problems!

It is very annoying, but then hey! Us lady's don't fit in to congenital standard clothing so we much be special... Wink

Hmmm, I am the same size as you OP and desperately trying to lose weight.

I agree that sizing is all over the bloody place. I even tried on the same jeans in different colours in Next and found the black size 14 was much smaller than the indigo size 14. Same bloody style.

However, I also agree with Bluntness that it's more of an issue when I am bigger. I remember trying on a size 10 skirt in Monsoon and not being remotely upset that it was too big Grin

CocoPuffsInGodMode · 29/04/2018 11:21

congenital might be right tbh, I have quite honestly stood in a fitting room cubicle and wondered how I got to my 40s without realising my crotch is apparently not where it should be Grin!

narlagirlxox · 29/04/2018 11:22

@happypoobum yes, I've had that problem also. The sizing is all over the place, but it has little impact when your a size 8-10 because I think smaller people look good in anything, and then the bigger I get, I try things on I would normally wear at a size 10 and it just doesn't look nice at all!

narlagirlxox · 29/04/2018 11:24

@CocoPuffsInGodMode yeah and then you realise your wearing your bottom back to front and realise actually no, the jeans are just hugging my crutch to tight. Grin the joys we have at finding clothing!

Don't even get me started in the underwear department!

I don't know why shops do this, I mean surely standardized sizing would be to their benefit.

Because a lot of women who are, say, a true 14, are more likely to buy a dress is it has a 12 on the label. Yes, it's vanity sizing, but don't underestimate the power of psychology; you're more likely to shift the stock. I have friends who'll only shop in certain places because they feel better about the sizing in that particular store. Silly from a logical stand point (who sees the label besides you) but completely understandable on another level.

Branleuse · 29/04/2018 11:27

i think if there were standardised sizing, it would be even harder for some women to find clothes, because we dont all have the same shape that is either a bigger or smaller version of another one

narlagirlxox · 29/04/2018 11:28

Of course Grin
