To ask Mumsnet HO why cant we have edit buttons or spell check

I go on other forums where you can edit your post for about 15 mins after you have posted so you can correct any spelling mistakes or add something on that you forgot or would make your post clearer.

Is there a reason why we cant have one mumsnet

see I forgot the ? an edit button would have allowed me to add one so I wouldn't look like an idiot - just saying

I believe it is so you have to stand by what you have said. It could make a nonsense of subsequent posts.

UrsulaPandress · 29/04/2018 08:59

And there is the preview button.

Checklist · 29/04/2018 09:01

I go on a forum where you can go back and edit a post anytime you like. You can't actually delete one, but you can just replace all the text with a full stop, so it says nothing.

BIWI · 29/04/2018 09:04

Because it would encourage trolls and goady fuckers even more.

Use the preview button before you press post

FrancisUnderwood · 29/04/2018 09:05

As irritating as it is, I do get why we can't go back and change what we've said, spelling mistakes or not.
I'd really like a function where you can 'like' another post or give it + rating.

Boulshired · 29/04/2018 09:05

On mumsnet even in the time it takes to complete a post it can have moved on so quickly that your post looks stupid never mind if people then edit.

iklboo · 29/04/2018 09:18

There's no preview button on the app.

IsadoraQuagmire · 29/04/2018 11:53

iklboo Yes there is, I always use it before I post.

TatianaLarina · 29/04/2018 12:19

Ratings are always abused though.

I’d like to be able to quote posts and to click on a username and find back posts rather than having to do a search.

RandomAccess · 29/04/2018 12:21

I don't know about the edit button but most browsers have built in spell checking now.

iklboo · 29/04/2018 12:39

@IsadoraQuagmire Ooh where is it on the phone app? I just get the emoticon, the underline/bold button, the paper clip and post on my screen. Is it on another part? That would be so handy!

I often remember something after I click 'post' and wish I could just go back and add it, not change the post though.

MeanTangerine · 29/04/2018 12:43

I love the thread title.

BertieBotts · 29/04/2018 12:45

Most browsers and phones have spellcheck built in - doesn't yours? Of course, this also leads to autocorrect errors, but most of the time it doesn't matter, sometimes it's even funny.

As everyone is in the same boat it generally means that small spelling errors are ignored as we all know people mistype sometimes. I know sometimes they are picked up on but that's usually people being pedantic arses and/or they are irritated with the OP for another reason and are taking a cheap shot IME.

BertieBotts · 29/04/2018 12:47

Also, on forums which allow you to edit generally double posting is a sin worthy of execution, which is just an annoying pain! Whereas double posting is perfectly fine here.

lljkk · 29/04/2018 12:48

There's a lot of sniping on MN about grammar & spelling errors. Not forgiving at all. Reddit is more forgiving.

5 minute window to spell check/revise would be reasonable. My bad for trying to say too much & editing too much... would love to be able to remove stuff posted in incorrect thread or fix stupid typos.

JJS888 · 29/04/2018 13:09

I certainly think it should be easier to delete threads. For example, stupid naive fool posts AIBU for shaving down there? MN regulars reply "you are clearly married to a paedo, what a disgusting man"
If they are really naive and don't know that is a stock response, they innocently walk into it and get shredded. And these are the pastings that bring in the media attention and advertisers so they never delete them, even when the OP is really, really distressed. If you wrote it and are genuinely distressed, you should at least be able to stop further posts once it turns into a free for all. But bullying is where the revenue is sadly. Nobody wants to read the lovely threads where people support each other.

IsadoraQuagmire · 29/04/2018 13:45

iklboo Sorry, I was talking rubbish! It's the mobile site I use on my phone, rather than the actual app! Blush Just ignore me!

BlankTimes · 29/04/2018 13:54

If there's no preview button, just read your full post yourself before you press 'Post Message'

It won't pick up bold etc. but your post should be decipherable.

Why does (seemingly) everyone want an edit facility when all it takes is a little time to check that your message is correct? Is (seemingly) everyone in such an almighty rush to see their words on-screen that they can't take a breath beforehand to check their own message for errors?

MissMorkansAnnualDance · 29/04/2018 13:55

"Edit button" = "rewriting history when it suits you"
