After ordering Papa Johns and having to wait an age, by which time it was past babies bedtime and she was falling asleep on me, I just wished I’d had a frozen pizza in to bung in the oven.

BUT.... are there actually any decent ones??? Papa Johns set us back around £30 so they don’t have to be super super cheap!

Bonus points if you let me know whether you prefer a pizza tray or a pizza stone for cooking them in the oven!

For actual frozen I’d go for take away style stuffed crust ones

Sabrinathethirtysomethingwitch · 29/04/2018 04:54

Chicago town stuffed crust are the best by far. And they are filling. A bit more expensive but definitely worth it. I hate when you get goodfellas etc. and it's like eating a thin piece of cardboard

PurpleDaisies · 29/04/2018 06:07

I really like the dr oetker pizzas, particularly the fungi or spinach ones.

Asda do a really nice spinach and ricotta pizza in their special range.

Vole3 · 29/04/2018 06:11

DS likes the Chicago Town deli crust - crust tastes just like tiger bread he says.

Fresh ones - M&S wood fired range

BarbaraofSevillle · 29/04/2018 06:12

What is good for you will depend on whether you like thin and crispy pizza or deep pan.

If you want something that approximates to a fresh good quality pizza I would disregard all the supermarket pizza counter ones as the base is not like pizza at all. Neither is Dr Oetker.

I like thin and crispy best, but if you like deep pan, the M&S square (chicago style?) ones are nice (fresh, but freezable, all the fresh ones are).

Otherwise, the oval fresh ones that all supermarkets seem to do these days are nice (usually branded as the Finest/Extra Special/The Best variant), or any fresh or more likely frozen ones that are branded as 'stonebaked' are usually good. There's a frozen one that's 'takeaway style' Chicago Town I think, which is also OK.

I also like the look of that ready to top pizza base, that's probably a really good authentic one and would suit me because I don't like the toppings on most ready made pizzas anyway, which always seem to include pepperoni or chicken. I usually like peppers/onions/olives/artichokes/mushrooms so end up buying a plain one and adding my own toppings anyway.

I honestly don't know why anyone uses Papa Johns, Domino's etc. Hellishly expensive and not particularly nice. In most cases it would be cheaper to go out to an independent Italian restaurant. We have a few really great proper wood fired pizzas restaurants in our city, but they mostly don't deliver, but do do takeaway.

Sainsburys sell Pizza Express pizzas so I'll occasionally buy one and stick it in the freezer. They're nice enough but they never stock La Reine, the ham one

43percentburnt · 29/04/2018 06:27

Lidl frozen 4 cheese pizza is my favourite. Followed by Morrison’s rainbow veg from the made in store fresh section.

Macarena1990 · 29/04/2018 06:39

The Iceland frozen pizza express ones are good and the big Waitrose fresh ones are lovely too. Prawn and chilli one is my favourite and can be frozen.

WaitedForGodot · 29/04/2018 07:57

Chicago Town and Goodfellas both do a deep pan 'takeaway style' frozen pizza which is by far the closest thing to proper greasy Papa Johns/Dominoes you're going to find.

Peachyking000 · 29/04/2018 08:28

Iceland. I’m not a fan of their food in general but their own brand pizza is a favourite in our house.

LaurieMarlow · 29/04/2018 08:57

We just freeze the pizza express/M&S/Tesco finest ones rather than buy frozen (which aren't nearly as nice).

noenergy · 29/04/2018 09:04

Just discovered the Chicago town thin one which is really nice or else pizza express.

Wobblybitts · 29/04/2018 09:04

Dr Oetker, I get the margarita and jazz it up with some extra toppings

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 29/04/2018 09:09

Dr Oetker spinach.

Toomanytealights · 29/04/2018 09:11

My dc like the Lidl salami pizzas that come in a pack of 2 and the Margharitas in a pack of 3. We like the Lidl sourdough fresh in salami and the vegetable one.Coop fresh pizzas are nice too.

PasstheStarmix · 29/04/2018 09:15

Stay away from Asda make you own as the toppings are disgusting (spam and water pumped up meats).

WhataLovelyPear · 29/04/2018 09:15

I'm a fan of Aldi's thin & crispy frozen pizzas. The sweet chilli chicken ones are amazing (almost as good as Dr Oetker's Pizza Pollo, which is my all time favourite but sadly a thing of the past now I'm an Aldi convert) and the spinach & ricotta flavour is a good second. They're £1.29 each and I buy 2 for 4 of us.
Seriously, if you're used to spending £30 a time you could afford to buy a whole load of supermarket pizzas and have a series of tasting sessions until you find your favourites!

PasstheStarmix · 29/04/2018 09:17

I agree with Pear and think a pizza tasting party is in order 🍕🍕

NoSquirrels · 29/04/2018 09:19

Dr Oetker! Lidl ones are an acceptable substitute.

My real favourite (but not frozen, is a fresh one) is the Co-op ham, mushroom & mascarpone. Yum.

FleurDelacoeur · 29/04/2018 09:19

Essential Waitrose cheese and tomato ones. Add your own toppings if you like.

I'm not a deep pan, stuffed crust fan.

Noboozeforme · 29/04/2018 09:20

Every other week or so Tescos sell the Pizza express ones at had price (£2.50). I get a few and chuck them in the freezer (there are instructions to cook from frozen).

Toomanytealights · 29/04/2018 09:49

I don't like Dr Oetker. Just seem paltry, flimsy and a bit artificial.

19lottie82 · 29/04/2018 10:18

I don't like Dr Oetker

They always look sooooo undercooked in the TV adverts and on the packaging. Like they have just been defrosted rather than cooked!

Ginosaji · 29/04/2018 10:35

This pizza is so yummy 😋
