To try and get the new build look? I’ve just realised that’s what I’m doing...

Evening All,

So, we own a 1960s / 1970s house and I’ve just realised what I’m trying to do with it!

Our previous home was an Edwardian cottage and I furnished / decorated it accordingly. Think log burner, stripped floors, the exception was the luxury bathroom, obviously not many of them in Edwardian times. I even made the garden cottagey with herbs and roses.

Our new (to us) house is 50 years old. When we moved in the back garden was a dog toilet, the windows were all blown, the carpets had massive holes where moths had eaten it, the walls were bright purple, bright blue, the grout was orange...you get the picture. But it had a garage conversion, and three double beds. I was pregnant. It was what we needed and, bluntly, what we could afford.

Now, the downstairs has solid wood floors, the upstairs has been recarpeted, the bathrooms and kitchen have matching wood effect laminate. The shower room and kitchen have been re-done, although the bathroom still needs doing. The whole house has been painted, the garden is still a bit of a work in progress,

but we’re getting there. The garage is a gorgeous playroom and we’re in the process of changing all the doors and windows.

What I’ve realised, though, is that aside from some 60s type lamp shades and doors I’m basically replicating the new build vlean lines, wood, cream, white, duck egg palate I see everywhere.

So basically, AIBU and should I be aiming for something more retro?

My 1910 house is a mixture of original features and modern Swedish design (Ikea 😄). Do your house to your own tastes. There’s no ‘shoulds’. Modern, vintage, contemporary or a mixture.

(Although we didn’t buy a house with light blue laminate floor and pink flock wallpaper. There are limits).

Do it up as you want to live. While I’m a huge fan of being sympathetic to buildings, you are not exactly defacing a grade I listed building.
If it’s a 60’s house, you can add Mid-Century-Modern details like the odd GPlan table or Ercol chair as a nod to the house’s past but ultimately live as you want.

You should be doing whatever you like. If that’s your taste it’s fine.

Make your house what suits you bearing in mind what you can afford. Unless you have unlimited funds, I should imagine most people’s decor is a compromise.

I live in an 1850s house. It is not decorated in a Victorian style because I don't like it. I like light houses and light paint on the walls, unfussy furniture and modern artwork in simple frames. Decorate your house for you and what you like. Its you that lives there.
