Does anyone have a male partner with diabetes?

Posting here for traffic...

My partner has type 1 diabetes. I find if we have unprotected sex I’m sure to get thrush in the next few days and I’m sure it’s because of his diabetes. Doctors don’t seem to think there’s a link, and suggest I have diabetes (I don’t). If we use a condom it’s fine, and it usually only happens if he ejaculates inside me. It means I have to stock up on thrush pills and it really affects our relationship as thrush makes sex really painful.

Are there any ladies out there who have also had this problem? I’ve never met anyone I can ask in real life and can’t find anything via google either

Probably won't help... but my partner has type 2 diabetes. I don't have this problem.

MrKaplansGlasses · 27/04/2018 21:53

Has he been treated for thrush?

Sandsnake · 27/04/2018 21:54

DH has Type one and I don’t have this problem. Sorry!

HeyToTheHo · 27/04/2018 21:55

So use a condom?

Create4 · 27/04/2018 21:56

DOCtors have given him the thrush cream, but not the tablet. I think the cream only helps the symptoms and not the cause but drs don’t like giving the tablet to men.

Dh is type 1, don't get thrush from unprotected sex with him. Has he been tested/treated for thrush?

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 27/04/2018 21:57

I hope you can fine a solution- I have had thrush issues in the past, (unrelated to dH diabetes) and it's horrible. How often are you affected? I found that I was not quite getting rid of it with the treatments... and now I think about it, it was worse after sex. I eventually got rid of it with a series of pessaries from the GP- using them alternate nights for about a week. Then it didn't come back. Could that be an explanation? Also, has your husband treated himself for thrush? Men can have it and be asymptomatic, not realise and be reinfecting you.

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 27/04/2018 21:58

Oops took too long to type, sorry!

Create4 · 27/04/2018 22:00

IF we have unprotected sex I will get it every two weeks or so @Whattheladybirdsaidnext which is far from ideal as I worry the tablets will stop working. We now use the ‘pull out’ method most of the time to avoid it.

I find pessaries don’t work for me, neither does the internal cream treatment

No. Never had that problem.

But diabetes does cause thrush, known as ''itchy testicle'. It went with industrial antibiotics, prescribed for something else, but that was a bonus side effect.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 27/04/2018 22:03

Yes! DP has type 1 and I get this a lot. The pharmacist said it can happen if someone has a lot of sugary drinks such as a type 1 diabetic does.

Create4 · 27/04/2018 22:06

Have you found any solutions to the problem @BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy?

A friend of mine whose dh has type 1 once told me that happens to her. We were talking about using condoms.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 27/04/2018 22:32

GP prescribed the Canesten tablet to take once a month just before AF as that's when it was more likely likely to flare up.

We used condoms for a while which worked well.

Currently pregnant so am using the internal Canesten cream as prescribed by GP. It's a pain in the backside!

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 27/04/2018 22:33

Also DP uses the cream even if asymptomatic.

gamerchick · 27/04/2018 22:35

Is the tablet safe to take that often? The leaflet warns against liver damage which puts me off.

gamerchick · 27/04/2018 22:37

Sorry OT ^^

My husband has diabetes but haven’t noticed a link.

LiteraryDevil · 27/04/2018 22:41

You might be passing it back and forth to each other. Your DP can get the tablet OTC as can you. Treat you both at the same time and see if that helps. No harm in trying it as far as I know.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 27/04/2018 23:05

Is the tablet safe to take that often?

Can't imagine GP would prescribe it if was? Maybe benefits outweigh risks.

gamerchick · 27/04/2018 23:20

I dunno that’s why I’m asking Grin a good question to ask the gp when I’m there next though.
