To get annoyed by private numbers?

Does anybody else find it frustrating when your mobile rings and its a private number? In the past couple of days I've had calls from a recruitment agency, the doctors surgery and my own workplace, all on private numbers. I thought one of the main perks of a mobile phone over, say, an old school land-line with a dial, is that you can see who's calling before you answer. With all the scams and cold callers around I'd like to know who's calling me before I answer - my phone has a feature that searches the number and tells you who's calling, failing that a quick Google usually does the trick.

I understand for personal calls why you may choose to withhold your number but for legitimate businesses surely there's no excuse.

First world problem I know!

No good has ever come from answering a withheld number.

That is true to a certain extent Look, especially if it's the school/GP/hospital. Sad

or it might be an appointment for you or your child,
crazy

Slartybartfast · 28/04/2018 21:59

but never mind, lets all be paranoid Hmm

You'll soon be able to say "I'm sure I didn't give you my number so that you could call me for this purpose. Are you sure you are complying with the new GDPR legislation?" See how quickly the calls stop then.

Being ex directory has nothing to do with your phone number showing up on calls Confused

I hope that GDPR will stop calls but I'm not too hopeful

@slarty I have never had an appointment for my child made by some1 phoning me. They always come via letter and reminders via text.
What appointment should I be expecting via the phone for my child exactly?

As pp said calls from private numbers never bring good news, and gps, schools, hospital don't ime call from private numbers often but if they do they can leave a message, just like they would have to if it had been a known number and I'd been unable to take the call.

But ur quite right there's no need to be paranoid, I mean what could possibly happen if u pick up that private number call?

ihatethecold · 29/04/2018 08:23

Does it not Patti?
My number won’t show up when I call someone!
Not sure what the Confused face is for?

PattiStanger · 29/04/2018 09:23

Ex directory means your number isn't included in the phone book or in directory enquiries.

It only applies to landline numbers.

Your phone may withhold your number when you ring someone because you've set it up that way but that's something completely different.
