Is my landlord being unlawful? Potential harassment, tax stuff, data protection

Name changed as this is VERY outing - have posted about this before so hi if you recognise it

Ok so its not my landlord, but the freeholder of the building who is the problem. I’ll call him LLLL (landlords landlord). This might be a long one but ill try and keep it concise - i just want to know how lawful or not his actions are.

  1. harrassment - LLLL has set up CCTV in communal areas of the building. He has sent my landlord multiple emails containing images of me and DP using the bin area. Usually accompanied by comments about our “questionable character”, one suggesting we should be evicted. One of these instances was me removing my ex-neighbours waste at my landlords request (aka a favour) and another is of DP disposing of entirely suitable waste while standing next to SOMEONE ELSE’S fly tipped plasterboard. The threat is to remove the offending items within 23.5 hours (5.30-5pm next day) or incur a fine of £100+VAT. Council collections are £16. This is the second time i am taking someone elses rubbish to the dump to avoid fines and damage to my reputation with my landlord.

  2. data protection there are no signs to say CCTV is in operation or by whom. The LLLL operates under a property management company who ARE registered with the ICO but it is only because weve had these emails that i know the company name to look this up. There are no contact details bar the registered company address and no details of the individuals able to access this data.

  3. tax stuff this bit is complicated and i really dont understand whether something odd is going on. The property management company is an LLP, with the LLLL as registered director and his wife as the secretary. There are 4 other companies listed as LLP members - all with LLLL and sometimes his wife as director, no one else. They seem to be concerned with very minor elements of the property management - e.g one deals with repairs, another with lettings. They all share a registered address. These member companies have assets of £3-6 million EACH due to having different mortgages for different properties attached to them. At least 3 have closed in the past due to insolvency. The only reason i can think of working this way would be for some kind of tax reason but i dont really understand what

My landlord and I are sick of this guy. My contract is close to being up for renewal so i wont be causing a fuss, but i would really like to know whether there are any legal issues with the way he’s behaving. Id really like to request all of the images they have on file of me, but fear this will not show me in the best light as i seem to have developed a stress-induced tic which causes very rude and arguably involuntary hand gestures at all of the CCTV cameras.

There have been changes to data protection law very recently that come into force on May 25th. You will have a legal right to request the footage and they cannot refuse you without breaking the law.
Google GDPR for everything you need to know.
