Sunscreen clothing damage

mammamiamore · 26/04/2018 17:19

We dutifully applied 50+ sunscreen during the heatwave, sprayed on, and rubbed in then waited before putting on clothes and going outside (about an ice lolly's worth of time) and fun week had by all, and at least no sunburn to report.

However, I brought the white wash off the line earlier in the week only to notice yellow stains around every neckline, on the shoulders of everyone's white shirts (inc 5 brand new school shirts for the summer term).

I have only just now managed to speak to their customer services (sent email on Tuesday but hadn't heard anything) only to be told that they will recall and test the product but this is what they call "accidental damage" and not their problem!

Has anyone else had this please and if so, how did you get the marks out? Vanish hasn't worked...

I am really really cross!

yes, this is normal.

happens with most suncreams, and most kind of tees.

No solution IMO

WishingOnABar · 26/04/2018 17:22

We always get this. Its just a downside of the creams, although dm did find a suncream called (i think) Ladivil or something similar which so far hasnt stained.
Dont get me started on the orange avon kids cream, meant to be easy for them to see where its going but ends up smearing orange all over their shirts

HeyMicky · 26/04/2018 17:24

Not vanish! It makes it more yellow.

A little bit of fairy liquid then a normal wash, then plenty of time in the sun

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 26/04/2018 17:25

What brand suncream is it? I have had this and find it does fad as time passes and it gets washed more. Perhaps soak with Biotex overnight before washing.

lopdedop · 26/04/2018 17:26

I work in tourism.

The all day long sunscreen ruins a lot of white sheets/pillow cases, as people don't wash it off before going to bed.
Drives the cleaners mad. Then next guests complain the bedding is stained, of course.
We have to chuck a lot out. Not sure if anyone has found a solution...

Excited101 · 26/04/2018 17:26

This is totally normal OP, how have you not hD this happen before?! What brand was it?

mammamiamore · 26/04/2018 17:34

Have no idea why hadn't noticed before on this scale as the same stuff as last year, and same high street brand!

Arrgghh, didn't know the vanish made it worse.
Thank you for fairy and biotex tips (have no idea what biotex is, but will google in a minute) we have to use non-bio wash liquid is this not helping?

What do others do then please to stop the staining?

Wilkinsons do a clear gel kind of once a day that doesn't stain. its a bit like that alcohol rubbing gel / hand sanitiser stuff in that it kinda melts. It is a bit strong so wouldn't advise for face but I like it because it rubs on and isn't visible or sticky lasts all day and doesn't stain!

BalloonFlowers · 26/04/2018 17:35

Standard sun cream behaviour- we live somewhere that typically requires 50+ suncream for at keast 6 months of tgevyear.
It destroys clothes and pillows - tho ive only just twigged on the nasty pillow situation.

mammamiamore · 26/04/2018 17:36

HeyMicky do you rub fairy liquid into the collar etc and then straight to the wash?

Kitsandkids · 26/04/2018 17:37

I really rate Calypso once a day sun cream. I changed to it after another brand really stained the kids' clothes and haven't had any more problems.

mammamiamore · 26/04/2018 17:46

stepaway thank you I will try and get some of that
balloon - yes! the pillow cases - I only connected that when I saw this wash. Can't believe how bad it is.

School uniform white shirts and not the best then!

Aldi do a good one it's more a oil than a cream. But some do really stain. Trick is let the lotion dry before putting clothes on. Still get some staining tho.

greenlynx · 26/04/2018 17:50

We had our first sunny holiday ( with lots of Soltan Once) last year. The clothes looked ruined. I googled and found advice about Fairy . So I separated all clothes on white/dark/colour and soak them in turns in the bath with LOTS of Fairy platinum, some overnight, then washed, etc as usual. Don't remember was it cold or hot water for soaking.
The only thing that was ruined - my dark blue M&S swimsuit, but I tried to wash it on holiday with soap, probably why. All light t-shirts and my precious tops came out ok and ready for this year.
Actually it was so impressive that we moved from non-bio washing liquid to Fairy platinum since then!

Pickleypickles · 26/04/2018 17:54

Rub in some lemon juice and bicarb and leave to soak for half hour, rinse and repeat and then wash as normal Smile

MissMarplesKnitting · 26/04/2018 17:54

Switch to mineral sunscreen.

You won't have this issue again. It's the chemical sunscreen ingredients that do this.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 26/04/2018 17:56

This is biotex. You add powder to water and soak overnight in bucket / bath if enough washing.

I use Napisan on my whites and bikinis to get rid of the yellow, it works wonders. I have yet to find a sunscreen that doesn't mark. Ultrasun isn't too bad.

HeyMicky · 26/04/2018 18:04

Yes just a bit straight onto the stain, rub it in gently then into the wash

YouCantGetHereFromThere · 26/04/2018 18:13

I remember discovering this for the first time. Now I try not to buy white clothes.

Just spent the morning at the dermatologists - the waiting room was a great reminder that you should still use sunscreen no matter how inconvenient.
