To find Zoella insidious

She seems to just push products onto her very young female fanbase. Each month she makes a video telling all her 12 and 13 year old followers what her "monthly faves" are.

The total of all of these is hundreds and she seems pretty clueless on many of them. Almost as if she's just paid to promote them. Then she links them all below with affiliate links so she earns a commission on every sale. For beauty products they have a huge markup so can earn a lot by doing this.

She triple dips as makes thousands just on each video from the adverts.

Advertising on childrens TV is very strict and regulated. Shouldn't she be subject to the same scrutiny as she's having more views the money TV programs get?

She’s awful and has no morals

She’s 28 not some little teen chatting to her peers and has made millions from lies and manipulation

Quicker she fades the better IMO although she’s canny enough to be financially set for life I assume

Shudder at this society

polkadotpixie · 27/04/2018 07:14

I like her! I'm too old and not silly enough to buy any of her merch but I enjoy her videos so I watch them (enviously!)

I don't think she's harming anyone and if you're not keen on her, don't let your kids watch her and don't buy any tat Smile

CherryBlossomSeason · 27/04/2018 07:20

About 4 yeas ago I had to know who she was for the brand I was working for so watched lots of old videos and thought she was quite pleasant and easy to watch.

As time has gone on though I can see what you mean about morally bankrupt.

I stopped watching her when it came to light that the author of her first book was paid a few grand without royalties, the email explaining how quickly the author needed to turn it around etc and yet Zoe STILL CLAIMED SHE CO-WROTE IT! AND WONT NAME CHECK THE REAL WOMAN!

The literary equivalent of Milli Vanilli

BodgingThisMumThing · 27/04/2018 07:24

I don’t watch her and I’m not really a fan, occasionally her videos auto play when I’m on YouTube etc. She makes a lot of money from her other businesses, her and Alfie deyes have an actual office block with proper employed staff. Alfie states YouTube careers won’t be around forever so best to do a start up whilst they’ve got the money and the contacts. Might explain why she’s making less videos.

Latenightreader · 27/04/2018 07:29

I found it hilarious that when everything else had sold out in the Boots 75% off sale, there was still a full bay of her 'advent' calendars. I like to think this was repeated all over the country.

Biologifemini · 27/04/2018 07:33

Yes these marketing people are insidious. It is pure advertising targeted at young people. Although I don’t know zoella specifically I have seen a few others.

And at the first sign of criticism they switch to talking about their mental health.

It completely stops debate.

It is extremely unhealthy but that is why I dislike you tube for teens and I personally don’t think it does any teens mental health and self worth much good.

fcekinghell · 27/04/2018 07:35

I don't think teens are into zoella anymore to be honest, except those who were there from the start. My DD is 10 so not really into makeup as yet although she's seen a few videos and found them 'boring'. She'd rather watch arts and craft videos or game videos and yes we do keep an eye on what she watches.

VickieCherry I'm confused about your primark comment. Are you disputing that she's a millionaire or saying she's secretly being sponsored by primark?

wrenika · 27/04/2018 19:19

She's a canny woman who has set herself up for life - you can't fault her business tactics! If you don't want your kids watch youtubers promoting products (their own or sponsored products) then you can stop them watching it.
(No, I don't like her either, but I can't really say I care about what she's up to at any given time. Nobody is forced to watch her channel.)

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 27/04/2018 19:21

YANBU to find Zoella insidious. YABU to have only just realised this now.

VickieCherry · 27/04/2018 21:18

eggcellent She's definitely a millionaire (have you seen her new house?!) and she's flogged Primark tat in her videos. I just had a look and there's nothing recent, but I definitely remember Primark hauls a few years ago. They may not have paid her, they may have, who knows - YouTube has only fairly recently started getting strict about disclosing sponsorships and ads.

I think the problem with the price of the Christmas "advent calendar" is that zoella genuinely did not know that £50 was an extortionate amount for her target audience, and indeed for the poor quality tat that came in it. She is out of touch with reality, and the value of money. She would not have given the price of the calendar a second thought, because she doesn't give the price of anything much thought any more! No excuse for only including 12 days though 🤨
