To ask what you think of lucky dips?

I'm doing a few fundraising stalls at gala days that are coming up in my local community. I was thinking of doing lucky dips but then started to doubt myself that it's a good idea.

I've got decent prizes to wrap up (Shopkins, Trolls, MLP, Minions stationery/toys etc.) but nobody will know that until after deciding to take part. I'm worried if parents have previously had bad experiences of a lucky dip where the prizes were tat then it might not get many takers.

If you were at a fete and your dc wanted to try a lucky dip would you be sceptical and try to encourage them to have a go at something else?

Or if you were happy for dc to try a lucky dip, how much would you be willing to pay (prize guaranteed every time)?

Open to other ideas if you'd avoid a lucky dip Smile

Our school fete has a standard £1 lucky dip.

I wouldn’t pay any more than that.

There was always a lucky dip when I was a kid, but they seem to have fallen out of favour these days. Without knowing what kind of prizes they were I'd struggle to decide whether to give DC money for it.

I'd do it as a kids' tombola instead. Then people can see what the prizes are up front and have a rough idea what they're getting. You can fill in any gaps with mini bags of haribo or whatever. If you want to keep to a "prize every time" you could buy small wrapped sweets for the non-winning tickets. Or I've heard of a "penny or a prize" stall where every ticket either got a prize or get a penny back (from a 10 or 20p stake) which was apparently very popular.

My kids love a lucky dip, but not for more than £1 a time

livingthegoodlife · 25/04/2018 21:26

hate lucky dips. plastic tat!

sorry.

even "quality" prizes like yours would put me off, im happier with consumable prizes than stuff to take home eg sweets, packets of bubbles, colouring/craft sets etc

LuckyDipper · 25/04/2018 21:47

Thanks Amazing and worn, I was thinking £1 but saw some nice things when I was out today that cost a bit more so I'd have to up the cost to £2. If I go ahead with it I'll stick to £1.

I thought of tombola slbhill42 but that will take up a lot of table space...will have a think about how to make the space work as I agree that it helps if people can see what they might win.

Thanks living it's good to hear your perspective as I had been avoiding sweets. Looked at craft sets and bubbles today so will add them Smile

I love lucky dips and so do my kids.

Could you maybe have a photo of the prizes so people have an idea of what they could win?

SaucyJack · 25/04/2018 22:20

I've got nothing against them meself.

But I will say, unless you're in an achingly right-on area, then do yourself and the kids a favour and have pink and blue tubs so they get a prize that alines with their gender stereotype of choice.

Lots of children do care, and it's supposed to be fun- not a political workshop.

Tombola is by far the most popular stall at our school fetes and is usually manned by several people at once as the queue gets so long.

The kids go nuts for lucky dip at our school. We do a few hundred prizes and always run out.
