Three month notice period

The longest notice period I’ve ever had is four weeks, but now I’m starting a job with a three month notice period

That seems excessive - i am not a manager with any responsibility and this is a low salary job. I’m worried it will be hard to move on as 3 months is a long time for future employers to wait.

Is this a standard notice period or too long do you think?

Wow very long- have you accepted already? At this point you can still negotiate if you haven’t accepted it.

Twickerhun · 25/04/2018 19:04

Its standard where I work, sorry

Hailey2 · 25/04/2018 19:06

I haven’t signed the contract but accepted the job (they send contract after acceptance)

I have 3 months.... it works both ways for me though if they make me redundant they have to give me 3 months .... so I am happy with that.

I think it’s quite standard in many places.

I’ve friend who have asked to be “released” early and have been.

I’ve also never not recruited Someone based on notice, always just picked best candidate (as clearly it should be)

CuntPuffin · 25/04/2018 19:20

Pretty standard. Most jobs I have had have been 3 months notice post probationary period.

I had one where they forgot to amend my contract from 1 to 3 months and they tried to hold me to 3 months when I resigned. I took great delight in pointing out that the 5 weeks I had given them (including 2 week's annual leave) was more than my contractual obligation. Grin

clippityclock · 25/04/2018 19:24

Mine is supposed to be three months however, in reality most people can give as much or as little a they like. My role is no management either.

It might be negotiable.

ChasedByBees · 25/04/2018 19:25

Standard for me too and it wouldn’t have been possible to negotiate. That said, not many people actually had to work that much notice. You could ask about it.

sonjadog · 25/04/2018 19:26

Standard everywhere I have worked.

ChasedByBees · 25/04/2018 19:28

Whilst it wasn’t strictly enforced where I worked they would have legally been able to insist on it of course.

NoWayNoHow · 25/04/2018 19:34

Where I am, notice period increases with salary 4 weeks standard, going up to 8 weeks when you hit circa £30k. Only gets to 12 weeks when you hit the c.£50k mark

3 months is VERY long for entry level/low paid position...

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 25/04/2018 19:35

3 months for everyone where i work now and for the last 2 jobs before that, entry level was 3 months and more senior jobs longer.

It's not unusual.

SemperIdem · 25/04/2018 19:39

It was standard in the legal assistant/paralegal jobs I had. Despite me not being on not much money and essentially being extraordinarily replaceable given the amount of law grads about.

Conversely, I’m now in a manegerial role in a different sector, the training involved is far from minimal and...it’s only 4 weeks. I’m still replaceable but not so quickly or easily.

Bizarre.

SemperIdem · 25/04/2018 19:41

Nobody actually worked the 3 month notice period either, at the level I was at. New employers always seemed to waive that minor detail aside.

SparklyLeprechaun · 25/04/2018 19:42

Standard in my line of work

hidinginthenightgarden · 25/04/2018 19:43

I work in teaching and it is only 8 weeks. 12 seems a bit much for a low paid job.

C0untDucku1a · 25/04/2018 19:43

How much notice do they have to give you?

If i hand my notice in now (april) i finish on the 31st of august. That’s depressing.

LoniceraJaponica · 25/04/2018 19:45

It's 3 months for managers where I work. Minions like me only have to give 4 weeks notice.

VioletCharlotte · 25/04/2018 19:46

My notice period is 3 months. Seems to be quite common with more senior roles.

Tistheseason17 · 25/04/2018 22:16

Mine's 6 months! 😁
3 months gives time to advertise, interview then wait for new person's notice to start. Pretty standard.

Boysnme · 25/04/2018 22:27

3 months standard for me too. I also wouldn’t be concerned recruiting someone on 3 months notice either.
