Donating to charity

Hey everyone

I know this might seem a weird subject but I started a baby clothing website last year just selling baby clothes and accessories.

I moved abroad but have my mother helping with sending out the parcels, Where I'm currently living there is alot of poverty (Philippines) and wanted to give back to one of the local charities here.

I suggested donating 5% of all sales to a local orphanage here to help, but my partner thinks that it's too low and wouldn't really benefit them because it could only be £10 to £20 a month.

I know this might seem a stupid thing to disagree about but i wanted to make to give back while im here and know the charity well and is genuine.

thank you

What is wrong with only £10-£20 a month? Still more money than they would have had if you didn't donate at all. It all adds up otherwise it would be pointless having the coin boxes for charity

You are doing a good thing. Don’t worry about actual figures. A charity would be pleased with any donation.

while your idea is noble what good would less than £1 a day be in real terms that wouldnt even buy a meal for each child for a day even at philipines prices, that level of money would just dissapear into nowhere because its such a small amount, it might be better to find out what the orphanage needs on a regular basis , save the money monthly and say every three months pruchase something that the orphanage can use

Charities usually like a regular income that they can rely on, no matter how small, because then they can plan better. Hence the existence of chuggers...

I give £2 a quarter to an organisation because they said it really helped their lobbying efforts if they can say they have x number of regular donors, and made it very easy.

Presumably you need to stay in business so maybe look at your surplus and perhaps decide if you make more than a certain amount of profit, you will increase the %?

Hi, I work for a charity. I completely disagree that small amounts disappear into nowhere. Every donation has value and most charities rely on small donations which add up. That's the whole point. If somehow all the minor donations disappeared we'd lose about half our income. Please carry on and don't let your donations be belittled by anyone.
