Learning to drive at 44

AIBU to think I’ve left it too late and will never build up the confidence needing to survive against trucks on the motorway!

Could you wait a year? 'Learning to drive at 45' sounds better.

My friend learned to drive in her mid 40s, she's very glad she did

TheMadGardener · 26/04/2018 00:09

I passed my test two months ago aged 47. Go for it.

I live rurally so have mainly been pottering around on B roads since. The nearest motorway is over an hour away and the thought of going on one terrifies me! I am also still very bad at parking, but hey ho.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 26/04/2018 05:23

Go for it!

As someone said you upthread, put yourself on your own bucket list /to do list! X

Smokeyrobinson · 26/04/2018 06:46

You 're definitely not too old! I passed my test first time at the age of 46.

jay55 · 26/04/2018 10:56

One of my grandmothers learnt after her husband died when she was close to 60. Sure that was the 70s so theee were less cars but cars are much easier to control now and give much better visibility.

GlitterBurps · 26/04/2018 11:08

Do it OP! My DH passed after 2 attempts last year aged 51. He was very reluctant to learn but now really enjoys driving. Go for it!!!

Seeline · 26/04/2018 11:13

My DM leant at 48, passed first time, and still drives every day, often on motorways at 81.
Go for it!

DuchyDuke · 26/04/2018 11:24

The driving instructer who I eventually passed with, was forever comparing me to three 60 year old female students of his. They were part of some church group, all recentlynwidowed, wanted to drive to Scotland as a group and so were learning to drive. One passed after 8 lessons and was motorway ready after her first pass plus lesson. The second passed after 14 lessons and needed two pass plus lessons. The third passed after four lessons, yes I kid you not, and needed three mainly confidence building pass plus lessons. They all went on the trip and now drive minibuses etc for their church group.

Meanwhile 34 yo me needed 40 lessons and I still can’t drive on the bloody motorway.

DannyLaRuesBestFrock · 26/04/2018 11:25

My mum never leaned to drive until my dad died. She passed her test at 52 and has been driving now for nearly 20 years. GO FOR IT!!!!

tooreal · 26/04/2018 11:59

I learnt to drive in my 20s, but only drove a couple of old bangers for a few months each. Fast forward to mid-40s. I needed refresher lessons and new lessons on the motorway (brilliant) and I bought an automatic car (brilliant). I am a much better driver than many of the idiots on the road, and appreciate it more. Go for it OP Smile.

Trinity66 · 26/04/2018 12:00

Good for you and no of course it's not too late!

tooreal · 26/04/2018 12:00

Duchy get some extra specific Motorway lessons. It makes a massive difference. I was too frightened before, now it doesn't faze me.

Catkins0877 · 26/04/2018 12:11

Go for it.:)

Member984815 · 26/04/2018 12:28

Frankfurt2017 · 11/10/2019 09:21

How are you getting on?

I’m learning at 37, have done 16 hours of lessons so far. I’m nowhere near ready to be driving by myself but I can feel myself progressing and building confidence with every lesson. My instructor is a good match for my learning style and I think that’s the most important thing.

Ponoka7 · 11/10/2019 10:10

Luckily in the UK lessons can now be taken on the motorway.

People won't, or can't pay out for pass plus, so it was good that it was changed.

I think with anything it's important to examine were the lack of confidence is coming from and address that. Sometimes it's just our own perception of aging.

Blueoasis · 11/10/2019 10:13

You'll be fine. You're not going to be confident straight away on a motorway, no one is. You will build confidence. Good luck. Smile

honeyloops · 11/10/2019 10:22

Do it! It'll change your life :)

Also, motorway driving is my favourite driving - don't be put off by the speed, and start small (one or two junctions locally, at a quiet time, is the best way I think).
