To think that this is not t-shirt weather for a child

So just about to leave the house and saw DD6 in her white school polo neck and reminded her to try not to get this one dirty and DH chips in 'especially as you won't be wearing your jumper'. I say its too cold to go with out and both protest that its not. DH then adds that he wasn't even planning to send her in with a coat on but as a compromise he'll give her her coat but no jumper or cardigan.

He thinks its hilarious that I think it is too cold and DD is sulking. We're in London current local temperature is 11 C with highs predicted as 14 C.

He's now agreed to put a cardigan on DD but admitted he did give her a coat or jumper yesterday and the weather was similar. I just don't get it. He's dressed DS 3 in a thermal vest and I could see the shirt and jacket he'll also be wearing hanging up.

I've passed lots of children and adults as I'm making my way to work and looks to me like 99% are wearing coats some with scarves s on. The rest do just have jumpers or cardigans a part from the few workmen I've passed.

Would be interested to know if any teachers out there would be concerned if a child came to school dressed like this or am I over thinking things?

Anuway AIBU to think this is not t-shirt weather?

I think some of it will depend on the child - my DS never ever wore as much as my DD - he was just warmer all the time.
I would want a coat sent today as the forecast is for showers.
Most schools are ridiculously hot - either still have heating on, or have so much glass that the slightest amount of sun turns them into greenhouses so a T-shirt would be fine indoors.
If they are running around at break and walking to school, they will probably keep warm, but have a coat if necessary.

blueskypink · 25/04/2018 09:19

In London at the moment wearing jumper, thick tights, ankle boots and a coat! Just right - for me.

It really amuses me how people are unable to adjust to the weather. Earlier this morning I passed a woman in a sun dress and sandals - she must have been freezing!

Last week temperatures in the south hit 29 degrees. People obviously thought summer had arrived and have put all their warm clothes away! It's still April!

My only caveat is that some people, especially children, tend not to feel the cold. My teen would go out in winter in a t shirt and has his bedroom window open however cold it is at night.

I'm in London and it's not cold today!! Bit breezy - but I live up a hill. I shoved daughters hoodie in her bag. She won't even take it out the bag. I am going out in a minute. Just a tshirt for me!!!

halcyondays · 25/04/2018 09:28

Depends on child, one of mine hardly ever wears her cardigan in school, she always has a coat. Usually get her to take the cardigan in her bag.

jammiebammie · 25/04/2018 09:31

How old is your dd? At school age is she not able to put a jumper on if she’s cold?

We’re in Scotland and I think the hottest it will get today is 11, dds at school with a polo and a hoody - no jacket. Usually I get her to put a jumper/cardi and spring coat in her bag and she can decide if she wants to wear them or not.
Dd3 is different as has asd and has no idea with temperatures - she would go out in the snow with a vest on and not blink twice! She hates wearing coats so I usually make sure she has at least a jumper/hoody/cardy to put on.

My daughter wore jeggins, vest, long sleeve top, fluffy hooded jacket. Seemed fine going to nursery around 8am this morning. She wouldn't have been fine in just a t-shirt though. Much younger though.

tenbob · 25/04/2018 09:38

Where in London are you?
I'm in Clapham and it's pretty warm. Tshirt weather here!

Tamingoftheglue · 25/04/2018 09:40

It's sunny but cold here. 10 degrees but feels like 8 according to phone. That is not t-shirt weather imo!

My girls have insisted on wearing their summer dresses since starting back after Easter but are still wearing cardigans, long socks and coats. The babies had blankets over their legs too.

CMOTDibbler · 25/04/2018 09:42

My ds (11) has gone in polo shirt and trousers. He's old enough to decide if he's cold or not, and it's his choice what he wears - it's not t shirt weather for me, but I'm not him

‘It really amuses me how people are unable to adjust to the weather. Earlier this morning I passed a woman in a sun dress and sandals - she must have been freezing!’

I think it’s depends on the person. For instance I have never felt so hot in the year after having my first baby (hormonal apparently and normal.) It bemuses me how people don’t get hot when I see them dresses for the himalayas in massive thick fur trimmed coats on a warm day...why??

PasstheStarmix · 25/04/2018 09:44

PasstheStarmix · 25/04/2018 09:45

And sweaty people in jeans when it’s nice outside...it looks so uncomfortable

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 25/04/2018 09:45

It depends on the child. I've sent all mine in with jumpers/cardis & a coat but 2 of them carried their coats to school, one had it done up with a hat & hood over like an etra from Nanook of the North. I didn't wear a coat just a jumper with a long sleeve t underneath & was warm after a few minutes. According to my phone it's 10°c/feels like 6°c. I do think it's best to send them with a coat & jumper though as it's fairly changeable this time of year.

BitchQueen90 · 25/04/2018 09:46

It's about 13 degrees here. DS gone in with a jumper and coat today - rain is expected later even though it's sunny now. Can never trust the British weather!

PasstheStarmix · 25/04/2018 09:49

I’d live in shorts and sandals all year if I could. I’d be suited better to a hotter climate...☀️

Nicknacky · 25/04/2018 09:50

I’m in Scotland, it’s cold this morning and my youngest went to nursery in a t-shirt and denim shorts while I carried her jacket. I think we need to let kids decide how warm or cold they are (age permitting obviously!)

I’m not interested if nursery are concerned about it!

SecretIsland · 25/04/2018 09:59

Costs and scarves at 11 C?!?

Good lord. It's 9 C here ATM (according to Alexa), sunny but breezy.

Mine have gone in polos.

PasstheStarmix · 25/04/2018 10:01

The sun comes out and I’m leaving my coat at home or at least carrying it. I will take it if wind is cold. It could be a northern thing though as we’re used to coldee weather Hmm

Thanks for all the replies so far. Happy to hear it depends on the child.

To answer some of the questions my DD is 6, no she wouldn't put on her jumper if she was cold because it would interrupt her playing and she and she struggles with getting dressed at the best of times (we're working on this).

It's t-shirt weather in SW London... I knew I should have never moved from SW to SE Smile. It's bright at the moment but cold... in my opinion.

Neither of my kids are mature enough to make their own decisions about clothes based on weather. Last week when it was hot my DS insisted on wearing his jacket as he can now put it on himself and he is obsessed with doing the zipper up. Ironically my DD wanted to wear her hoodie because it was new and 'cool'. However I do accept I'll have to cut the apron strings eventually and that perhaps my DD might not feel the cold like I do.

What did the child want?

Camomila · 25/04/2018 10:33

The weather has been confusing this/last week! I've been sending DS to nursery with his coat on and then changing him into shorts and t-shirt for the walk home some days.

Atm he goes out in a long sleeved t-shirt and hoody with s jacked stashed under the pushchair just in case.

CuntPuffin · 25/04/2018 10:49

My DS7 removes any extra layers within seconds. He has always hates being too bundled up. He sleeps half naked without his covers on. I warn him if I think he is making a poor choice, but leave it up to him.

jay55 · 25/04/2018 10:59

I left without a coat or cardigan on this morning, east London. Put cardigan on in overly cold office later though.

Mia1415 · 25/04/2018 11:03

I think it depends on the child. Both me and my DS are 'warm blooded' and wear t-shirts when others are in coats! As long as the child has some warmer clothes to put on if they get cold I don't think its fine.
