Cleaner always on phone when ironing

Am I being silly? She hasn’t burnt anything but she’s chatting away the entire time with the phone balanced on her neck while ironing. Much slower of course!

Why not? Speakerphone (which someone else suggested) is noisy and intrusive. Neck propping is uncomfortable and risks dropping the phone. They cost peanuts. I use one all the time connected to my phone to listen to music, audio books, make calls. It's hardly revolutionary technology to have a handsfree headset. And if the OP values the cleaner, investing in a cheap headset which allows her to work quicker would save money in the long run.

Alpineflowers · 24/04/2018 21:51

Is the 8 hours spread out over a few days though?

Bobbybobbins · 24/04/2018 21:53

8 hours? Tell us more OP!

Aroundtheworldandback · 24/04/2018 21:54

MrsMade, poor cleaner? Ironing’s her favourite job leaves it to the end, now I know why!! Comes twice a week so 16hrs not a mansion 6 bedrooms but kids at uni so only cleans half the house. When kids come home there’s more work which is why I don’t pay per room/job. Yes she’s slow!

Have a feeling cleaners paid by the hour leave ironing to last so they can easily control their speed and what time they finish.

She needs a headset.

blueskyinmarch · 24/04/2018 21:59

16 hours a week is a ridiculous amount of time for a cleaner. Who needs that much cleaning to be done?

Pigleteer · 24/04/2018 22:03

This is a wind up. You have a cleaner that’s spending 16 hours a week cleaning the equivalent of a 3 bed house (half the six bed). My cleaner does my 3 bed in 2.5 hours. You must be paying at least £160 a week - I call bullshit!

boywiththebrokensmile · 24/04/2018 22:07

mmm, in fairness as long as she is doing everything you want her to do in the 8 hours and the work is up to scratch i would not care tbh, however it would annoy me if i felt she was not doing all the tasks.

Like do you give her a set list of jobs to do daily and are they all done to your satisfaction?

Thespringsthething · 24/04/2018 22:07

Mine does 4 bed in 3 hours, and also fits in a bit of ironing, she is super-speedy though. I also can't think what you could possibly need that takes 16 hours a week- for that I'd want daily cleaning, cooking the food/shopping and other household tasks.

Aroundtheworldandback · 24/04/2018 22:08

No not a wind up but now I’m wound up. I either take it or leave it- she’s slow but thorough and up till we had to put our dog down, she walked/fed him. Will try and talk dh into lett Nig me cut her hours

Is this one of those stealth boast posts? [eHmm.
I have a 4 bed house, and had 3 messy teens and DH, and dogs. Our cleaner had ours sparkling in 3-4 hours once a week. No ironing though. Ironing is a waste of time

WhiteBobbles · 24/04/2018 22:11

Cleaning a 6 bed house should not take 2 full days a week.

Thespringsthething · 24/04/2018 22:11

I think there's a benefit to having someone in twice a week if you want them to do chores like washing up/general daily tasks. If you are looking for a once a week thorough clean, with your household doing the rest, then this is an excessive amount. My cleaner actually runs out of things to do at around 3 hours, because she's tired out and done all the ironing (we don't iron sheets and stuff like that). She would be utterly bored with 8 hours as there really wouldn't be enough to occupy her.

SusanneLinder · 24/04/2018 22:12

If you insist on having stuff ironed...send it to an Ironing company.Problem solved

Iggiattheend · 24/04/2018 22:15
Shock
sweeneytoddsrazor · 24/04/2018 22:15

Hang on if all the kids are at uni is it just you and OH at home? How much mess/ironing do you create to justify 16 hours a week.

Isn’t it normal to iron shirts, tshirts in summer, jeans? If you send your ironing out isn’t it a hassle to have to be in at a certain time when it’s delivered back?

Benefit to having cleaner twice a week is clean floors downstairs, clean sheets twice, clean kitchen. I know she could do it in less time if she wasn’t so slow. Next year when it’s only me and dh here I’ll cut her hours but my kids do no chores when they’re back (my fault) so not that simple. Also have to pay her while we’re away which is mad but fair I guess.

Nanny0gg · 24/04/2018 22:25

If a cleaner is happy to be paid to iron, then why shouldn't they do it?

And outside of MN many, many people prefer their clothes (and bedding) ironed.

Aroundtheworldandback · 24/04/2018 22:27

Oh get over yourself Smeaton! Having said that, thanks for making me laugh!

OP posts:
Nanny0gg · 24/04/2018 22:27

And why does the OP have to justify anything?

If she wants her floors cleaned twice a day, the bathrooms scrubbed after every use and the beds changed daily, it's her money and her choice, surely?

quizqueen · 24/04/2018 22:29

People at work should not be taking/making personal calls unless it's an emergency. She could ask if she can bring a portable battery operated music device of some sort which doesn't use your electricity. If you are there to see her using the phone, you could do your own cleaning though.

MarmaladeIsMyJam · 24/04/2018 22:32

What does she do for 8 whole hours in your house Shock that’s verging on deep clean territory! Although I’d be bloody slow as well if I was being paid by the hour and my employer was happy to do so.
You do realise she’s taking the piss OP?
My cleaner never did more than 4 hours and I’ve got a six bed with kids at home.

Aroundtheworldandback · 24/04/2018 22:33

Quizqueen, I’m perfectly aware that I could do my own cleaning- but we pay her as I don’t fancy it!
