To not send a broken item back to Zara home because I would be sending it all the way to Poland?

So, I ordered some storage baskets and a small tray to keep my paperwork in. It arrived today (in a big box) and the tray is broken. I emailed customer services telling them this and saying I had a photo if they wanted to see and could they send a replacement tray. Yes, they said but please send a photo. I did.
About 3 hours later they replied saying they were sending a replacement a courier company to come and pick up the broken item. I queried this as it would have to go back in the box, 60cms x 45cms, what a waste of effort. Sent that off, no reply.
I opened the attached dhl return label after and see that it would actually go back to Poland.
Is this completely nuts? Posting something back to Poland for it to be thrown away anyway? I've emailed them again saying I won't send it as they really should be embarrassed, they haven't replied!!

The tray was £19.99 btw.

If they want it returned they want it returned, it's not costing you. They may want to send it back to manufacturer, in order to claim themselves for it being broken.
you're getting your replacement, so this one is technically not yours anymore, it's theirs to decide what they want done with, just return it. Your email also was rude and pointless.

But it has to go back in a massive box all the way to POLAND. I've had similar with John Lewis and they've just said throw it away and this week with a Smiggle cup, they said throw it away too.

I understand if it costs a fortune but I sent 2 very clear photos showing exactly where the break was. I was obviously a bit more polite than my summary but I did say I thought they should think of the environmental impact of sending a box 60cms x 45cms all the way to Poland, surely the cost of the DHL would be more than the cost of the tray?

No it's not technically mine but is of no use to anyone!
