Morning!

If a job is advertised with multiple agencies, should I apply through more than one? If not, how long should I wait to hear from the first one before I try another?

I've applied for other things through agencies that I am perfect for (IMO of course) and have heard nothing, and don't want to be sifted out by one when another might put me forward.

Consultancy works by them putting forward a candidate and gaining commission. If you tell them outright oh I've applied for the same job with lots of agencies they may not bother with you. Play it a bit smarter.
Say I think I must be a good fit for this job as I've been approached by another agency for a similar role - it could even be the same role - do you have exclusivity? . I'm talking to them on Thursday...
this gives current agency time to put you forward to candidate and make sure you are their candidate. If they haven't done anything by the day you stated call them for an update.
The best agency to be represented by is the one who actually has a close relationship with the client. Don't be afraid to assess the agency - what is your relationship with the client? Do you have this role exclusively?

Thank you. Now have interest from the one I've applied to. But it's so useful to have that tactic, so I appreciate your reply.

If you put your CV forward with multiple agencies, it would still go to the same hiring manager or CV screening person. It would look odd. I also think it is unethical. If you agree for one recruiter to put you forward, then ask another to do the same thing, you are obviously happy to bilk the first recruiter out of their few, or waste the time of the second one. How rude.

My point was more that the recruitment consultants presumably do a first screening. So one might not put my Cv forward, while another company would.

It's not rude. It's a case of not wanting to be screened out and maximising my chances. It is no more rude than when you apply and don't even get an acknowledgement or rejection.

Right. In that case, I suppose the only thing you can do is to ask them: did you put my CV forward? If they say yes, you ask why it was rejected. I certainly wouldn't go spamming my CV round the market by applying with several agencies for the same role without telling them. Besides the ethical considerations, I think it looks desperate!

Rawhh · 24/04/2018 13:29

To be honest OP it would be rare that you would get a job if the first consultant wouldnt put you forward.

Those consultants who will go to the effort of properly considering a candidate will be those who are more competent. If they don't put you forward then it's because you're not going to get it.

The consultants who would out forward a CV that has been declined by the more astute consultant will be doing so either to hit submission targets, look busy or on the minute off change the client may consider the candidate.

No you risk the hiring manager binning your CV as they don't know which agency you were with first and therefore who they need to pay commission too.

If not, how long should I wait to hear from the first one before I try another?
Unfortunately there is no time scale, which means you may miss out.

If you can, ask one of the other recruiters to check whether you have been put forward.

PrimalLass · 24/04/2018 13:38

Anyway it is sorted as the first one is interested.

I don't really agree that just because one consultant rejects my application then I'm not suitable a post.

Thanks for your help.
