DH and I are finally moving from our tiny rental to a slightly less tiny rental! Let the champagne flow.

It's been five years since I've moved, and I feel a bit lost at sea with it all. I feel like there must be tricks/tips/hacks, and generally sensible ways/orders of doing things.

For context, I am already a committed Kon-Mari-ing minimalist, so am all good on decluttering, it's more physically packing stuff, and the order in which to do/move things. e.g. I have stacks of books... has anybody found a manageable way to both be able to pack and lift them yet??

We are lucky enough to only be moving a couple of miles, and we get the key to our new place two weeks before we move in, so hoping to do things in dribs and drabs, rather than doing everything on moving day.

Am I unreasonable to ask you to share your moving tips with me?

I put heavy books in wheely suitcases as it means they’re easy to transport than in boxes which are too heavy to lift.

Also bags for life are a good alternative to boxes for (non fragile) little bits and bobs as they take up less space then boxes and can be manoeuvred in the boot a bit easier.

Well the last time we moved (nearly 20 years Shock) we had professional movers. But the time before that I remember my sister lent me some cardboard wardrobes - similar to these Cardboard WardrobesVery useful.

Also pack the fridge as one of the last items so it will be up and running quickly.

Mail redirection service worth mentioning

gummi is right- dont be arsed taking everything out of drawers when you can just wrap them and then put them right back in.

As youve said youre moving to a rental- for the love of god... (Im going to capitalise this, not to be rude but to truly emphasise)... TAKE PICTURES OF EVERY SINGLE ROOM AND EVERY SINGLE FITTING BEFORE YOU PUT A SINGLE BOX IN THERE.

Landlords are either great, or they are buggers. I have moved so many times: one landlord was grand with the fact my child had put crayon on the wall (though I offered to re-paint), another threatened to forfeit my deposit because after we had cleaned out and moved,, my ex had pooped in the toilet and forgotten to flush, another said that we had damaged the property until shown photos dated from a couple of years before.

Take your gas and electric readings down as they are and ask the LL for the readings from the previous tenant. Notify companies asap.

Jesus, reading this thread there no wonder they put moving as one of the most stressful things!

Ikea bags all the way! Especially for books! They handle the weight better & they are evenly distribured more then in a box.

Start packing as early as possible. Declutter, so stuff you don't want for charity and rubbish. Set up post redirect. Make the bed in new house. Make a box of essentials like kettle, drinks, snacks, mobile phone, toiletries. Start sorting out change for your utilities like electric, broadband, insurance
