To be worried about my voice being croaky?

Bear with me, I know this sounds stupid. But for the last year or so, my voice has been very croaky and I had a sore throat that lasted for about four months. Now it's ok again, but I notice I sound funny when I sing to my daughter and my voice often seems to almost crack.

I haven't been to the doctor because it seems like a stupid reason, but I'm worried that something could be wrong. I've no idea what and it seems so minor that it's stupid to be concerned about it. AIBU?

Yes- go to the doctor. A sore throat for 4 months is not good. It may be nothing- but it's worth checking out.

FWIW- if it is nothing (according to the doctor) then try having some singing lessons to get it all working properly.

Could be mild but chronic acid reflux, or caused by an allergy. Any change you notice in your body is always worth getting checked out, OP.

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/04/2018 20:45

No, YANBU. Persistent voice change should be checked out. Lots of possible causes, a few serious others not.

See your GP and do not Google - you will only scare yourself when chances are it's completely fine. Smile

Mine did that and I was diagnosed with underactive thyroid. Other symptoms were some weight gain, tiredness, and I thought that was down to just getting older. Go to the docs.

RoseyOldCrow · 22/04/2018 20:48

Low thyroid function can also cause throat & voice problems. Have you any other symptoms associated with that, eg fatigue, weight gain, thinning hair (esp between outer eyebrows & hairline, rather bizarrely)
Whatever, when you see your GP ask for some thyroid tests (prob TSH initially, poss T4 if GP is feeling generous)
Best wishes with it.

This is exactly how I discovered I had a thyroid and silent reflux problem.

Thank you, this is really helpful information. I didn't want to Google and freak myself out.

I do get a bit tired, am overweight (but haven't put on weight) and have lost a bit of hair, but I had put this down to being 6 months post-partum. It sounds like a thyroid test may be in order.

I have Sjögrens & a dry throat is a symptom.
Any other issues?

TheRealMotherGoose · 22/04/2018 21:02

I don't think it could be Sjogrens; I don't have any dryness. It's just that my voice sort of cracks a bit and that's new over the past year or so, plus the sore throat.

I'm not sure if the tiredness and hair falling out is really a symptom, or if it's down to the new baby! It's mostly just the sore throat which I seem to be prone to at the moment, and the cracking voice.

Oh yes, hair loss also associated with thyroid issues. I’d forgotten about that. Once the medication dose was found, I am relatively symptom free. Good luck.
