I just cringe every time I see it.

hoxtonchick · 13/05/2007 21:53

Hilllary · 13/05/2007 21:53

SenoraPostrophe · 13/05/2007 21:53

of it off, surely?

colditz · 13/05/2007 21:54

You shouldn't of started this thread! It will kick off!

Carmenere · 13/05/2007 21:54

Yes it is crap

Gobbledigook · 13/05/2007 21:54

ditto
it's in a thread title isn't it?!!!!

DelGirl · 13/05/2007 21:54

'should of' instead of 'should have' is what I think is meant

Gobbledigook · 13/05/2007 21:55

LOL Colditz!!!!!!

DelGirl · 13/05/2007 21:55
Blush
hana · 13/05/2007 21:55

aha
I just read the same thing and inwardly cringed too
what's wrong with saying that?
{nothing}

hairymclary · 13/05/2007 21:55

Yes, it just really irritates me. Because I read it as "of" and then it makes no sense

OP posts:
SenoraPostrophe · 13/05/2007 21:55

damn, colditz, you beat me to it!

Hilllary · 13/05/2007 21:56

Ahhh I get it now - yes I agree

GibbonInARibbon · 13/05/2007 22:02

It's a colloquialism...does it really bother you that much?

colditz · 13/05/2007 22:06

It's not, it's poor English. Saying it is a colloquialism, and I say it all the time, but I write 'HAVE'.

hairymclary · 13/05/2007 22:08

I don't think it's a colloquialism. I think it is people not pronouncing it properly and as such not realising that the correct word is have.

OP posts:
GibbonInARibbon · 13/05/2007 22:10

yes but many people write in the same way they speak, they know it's not grammatically correct, but really, in the grand scheme of things...does it matter if someone commits a grammar faux pas??

SoMuchToBits · 13/05/2007 22:11

A lot of people say "Should've", which makes it sound like "should of ".

mylittleimps · 13/05/2007 22:11

not at all. it's so annoying but then i find "f" instead of "th" in speech annoying eg fank you

GibbonInARibbon · 13/05/2007 22:12

I often say should of but know it should be should have.

My education must count for nothing

SenoraPostrophe · 13/05/2007 22:13

but, really, why let it wind you up? some people didn't have the benefit of your education. You can still understand them.

colditz · 13/05/2007 22:13

No, but it still makes me twitch and mutter "Have!"

GibbonInARibbon · 13/05/2007 22:13

very true somuch...that's where it stems from no doubt.

hairymclary · 13/05/2007 22:16

oh I know it's irrational. It just irks me that's all.

OP posts:
UnquietDad · 13/05/2007 22:16

Loathe it. Not a colloquialism or regionalism - just people's ignorance of the origin of what they are saying. Just like "Haitch".
