To think this is odd (children’s clothes related)

Putting the issue of ‘boys and girls’ clothes aside.
I’ve just been looking for some summer clothes for DD, to be fair only looking in a catalog at home (rather well known for kids clothes) so not representative of every store. But it struck me that all the shorts in the ‘girls’ section are short, stopping more than half way before the knee, yet all boys shorts are around knee length.
I know women’s shorts tend to be short and men’s knee length, guessing as that’s the fashion (although weird as more women than men seem concerned with how they look and like to be covered up) and I guess that’s why it’s the same in children’s clothing.
But with general advice of keeping covered up in the sun, I find it odd girls shorts are so much shorter than boys. There also more strapless tops and spaghetti straps, where as for boys much more choice in standard t shirts.

I know I’m being unreasonable in the sense that it must sell so obviously clothes shops make and sell it and I know I can (and do) buy from the ‘boys’ section.
But when and how did this come in?

I noticed this the other day whilst shopping for my 3 year old. I ended up (not for the first time) buying her stuff from the boys section.

GreenTulips · 22/04/2018 13:56

To be honest I'd always assumed Men's shorts were longer to avoid accidental flashing. Plus their undies are usually longer.

Girls are allowed to accidenlty flash then?

MerrilyWatkins · 22/04/2018 14:01

There are long sleeved t-shirts at Fatface.

WeaselsRising · 22/04/2018 14:02

If you look through the whole page of shorts on the Mountain Warehouse link KurriKurri pasted there are loads of longer shorts for girls. We had the Steve Backshall ones for DD last year and they are still going strong. Looks like they have lots of styles reduced as well.

Emboo19 · 22/04/2018 14:04

I do often pick things from the boys department stitch and think I will be doing for shorts. It’s annoying and a shame as I’ve seen some really lovely multi packs of shorts that are just want I wanted, only they are really short. It doesn’t help that she’s quite dinky (slimness wise, probs average height wise) so she’s in smaller size than age, which would obviously make them shorter too.

Also when DD was around 18 months last summer she spent a lot of time in playsuits. Long legged but hareem style and light weight materials. Kept her cool and covered up for Nursery where she was climbing on everything. Mainly got them from Next or Boden.

On holiday she lived in rash suits which were long legged as we were in the pool or on the beach.

Smeddum · 22/04/2018 14:09

I’ve struggled to find clothes for DD (4) this year that aren’t mini versions of very revealing women’s clothes.
So we’ve gone with cycling shorts and tshirts because I don’t want her clothes to restrict her doing what she does and most of what I’ve found would be impractical for riding a bike, cartwheels, climbing frames etc.

Smeddum · 22/04/2018 14:10

@Emboo19 Tesco has multi packs of knee length cycling shorts if they’re any use to you?

Emboo19 · 22/04/2018 14:11

Mountain watehousecstart at 2-3 years Weasels so would be too big. I’ll remember them for next year though.

She had a lot of those last year MynameisJune but she’s showing a lot of interest in using the potty and thinking summer holidays would be a ideal time to give it a go. So I’m particular looking for easy up and down practical shorts, ideally in multi packs and not expensive. Of which there’s an abundance in the boys section and that’s what’s annoying.

Like these, I like the colours and pattern and £10 for three pairs, only looking at them I know they’ll be really short on.

@emboo DD is potty training now and even at 2.5 she is living in dresses because otherwise she struggles to get leggings down/up again effectively. If you want to potty train then I’d look at dresses rather than shorts.

Gwenhwyfar · 22/04/2018 14:34

Isn't it because girls have the options of skirts. Longer shorts are men's version of a skirt?

user1471426142 · 22/04/2018 14:36

Emboo- have another look at the JoJo link. They aren’t leggings but twill cotton and come up like long shorts/cropped trousers depending on whether you roll up the bottom bit or not. My daughter is tall so they look like long shorts.

bookmum08 · 22/04/2018 14:43

I tend to get my daughter 'boy' shorts because they usually have elastic waists so are easier to get on and off and more comfy. 'girls' ones usually have jeans style button and zip - not very comfy.

thismeansnothing · 22/04/2018 14:44

Yanbu. Every summer this is my biggest gripe. DD (6) doesn't like the 'girl' shorts cos they are too short and rub. And I don't like them cos they are too short. I really struggle to find simple knee length shorts. Always check 'boys' stuff but then they have OTT stitching and structuring there's something about them I don't like.

Yesterday I spent all day traipsing around town trying to find some. Found a pair in Morrison's so got a couple. Then the outdoorsie shops like Mountain WareHouse had cargo type ones DD liked. But every year is the same

sentMai · 22/04/2018 14:44

@Thespringsthething

There's one section for short, midi and bermuda.

The emphasis you put on "there's one section of longer length" is misleading at best.

bookmum08 · 22/04/2018 14:44

Plus I prefer knee length too. Just looks nicer.

DotForShort · 22/04/2018 14:46

It’s definitely a carryover from adult fashions. Women’s shorts have been getting shorter and shorter in recent years, while men’s shorts are longer and longer.

I would just buy shorts from the boys’ section.

GrimSqueaker · 22/04/2018 15:31

Couple of years ago I resorted to just raiding the charity shop for tracksuit bottoms and trousers and took them up to the required length for shorts - tiny short shorts plus nappies poking out the bottom (mine was late to train) wasn't a good look. Plus some from "boys" and then I found a local wool shop that sells kids clothes as well that had some unisex ones in just bright colours that got us through a couple of years.

I've kind of given up now since the eldest is more clothes conscious and wants to wear what her peers are - which is what's on bloody offer in the supermarket - which are short as hell. Can't say I particularly like the lack of choice though.

DailyWailEatsSnails · 22/04/2018 16:20

It pisses me off. It pisses me off even more that teen DD is very fussy about this and only wants short-shorts; I had to cut down some of her old jeans for an active holiday few yrs ago, when it was required that any shorts not be short-shorts & there was nowhere to buy them at reasonable length (DD only just found it tolerable to wear something so unfashionable for that single week, anyway).

I wear bloke shorts nowadays. They actually come with... pockets !!
Even the Mountain Warehouse offerings aren't what I want.

Emboo19 · 22/04/2018 17:31

My DD just can’t do dresses MynameisJune she’s a climber and she ends up getting cross when her dress gets in the way. But that’s why I’m wanting simple loose elasticised ones, that hopefully she’ll be able to pull up and down quite easily.

I had a look user147 they’re nice but longer than I wanted she’s got a few pairs of trousers that length and lots of little leggings. The shorts they do are nice too and don’t look as short as other places £14-£16 a pair though Shock which I really don’t want to pay for potty training or playing in the park, think I’ll order a few pairs as nicer day out shorts though.

DS permanently wears shorts. He had a bit of a growth spurt in the autumn and a few of the older pairs were beginning to look like hot pants (always the leg length, never the waist) so I went off to an outdoors shop as the best chance of finding some shorts clinging on at the dreg ends of the sale stock.

I managed to get two pairs of navy shorts of a combat type style. Pair one was completely plain and knee length. Pair two had a slight touch of pink stitching, a bit of internal floweryness and is quite plainly shorter in the leg.

Fortunately being a 7 year old with a finely tuned girl-dar, he seems to have overlooked these apparently feminine touches and wears them happily enough... it was either that or the horror of trousers Grin
