...to think this woman is being unbelievably precious about her grass?

Bought my ds a rather expensive football for his birthday - it was his main present. On Friday he and his friends were kicking it about as they walked home from school. They walk along a winding road with lots of big houses with big gardens, and they accidentally kicked it someone’s garden.

He rang the doorbell, but no-one answered, so we went round this morning to ask for it back.

A woman answered the door, we asked her, and she said she had seen the football at the end of the garden, but she couldn’t get it back as they’ve just had their lawn relaid and can’t walk on it for 3 weeks!?!

Is it just me who thinks she’s being incredibly precious over some grass? I can’t believe we’re going to have to wait 3 weeks to get back Ds’s football - he’s so upset. Her walking quickly to get it wouldn’t do any harm. I offered to send ds as he’s very small and light but she refused to let him.

I am sat here watching a squirrel run up our bird feeder, get a peanut and bury it in the lawn. Over and over again.

Good job we don't have brand new turf. Shock

£115 for a kids toy football? Good grief.

Sparklingbrook · 21/04/2018 19:56

I don't see the problem with them getting a decent football as a present. There are worse gifts. I would rather spend £40 on a football they can use over the fields than a PS4 game.

They can buy their own footballs if they want to spend £115 though. Grin

Smeddum · 21/04/2018 19:57

I was horrified when I found that Mitre one! Thankfully the DC are happy with their £20 from the Celtic superstore Grin

Sparklingbrook · 21/04/2018 19:58

Mine definitely got fussier with footballs as they got older. Not just any old football will do apparently.

HappyLollipop · 21/04/2018 20:06

@Smeddum I can't believe it £115 for a EFL ball it's not the even premier league one Shock

OP YABU, I'm sure she's paid a lot of money on her turf, I don't blame her wanting to get I ruined for a ball! I think you'll have to wait the 3 weeks at least your son will learn a lesson to be more careful with his football in future.

Smeddum · 21/04/2018 20:08

@Sparklingbrook I await that stage with horror Grin

@HappyLollipop the Champions League one is “only” £90.

Sparklingbrook · 21/04/2018 20:10

Yes, make the most of now Smeddum. It won't be long til you are looking at the £90 football boots and all manner of £££ shin pads and goalie gloves.

I kind of miss all that.

LeighaJ · 21/04/2018 20:13

"inlaid with diamonds."

Wouldn't that make it stronger? Grin

Smeddum · 21/04/2018 20:16

@Sparklingbrook oh dear! DD has already declared her intention to play for Celtic Ladies Grin

SecretIsland · 21/04/2018 20:17

Having a garden re-turfed costs a fortune and they do say not to walk on the grass for a few weeks.

I would have also made you wait tbh. I wouldn't risk it. Yabu.

Sparklingbrook · 21/04/2018 20:19

That will be brilliant Smeddum. I moaned at the time a lot but they had such a good time playing for local teams growing up.

Coastalcommand · 21/04/2018 20:23

YABU. Hopefully you’ve both learned a lesson about playing football in the street.

ScattyCharly · 21/04/2018 20:26

Yabu. She’s not supposed to walk on her presumably very expensively laid grass. I wouldn’t either. Your ds will have to learn that the activity needs to be done in an appropriate place.

Daifuku9 · 21/04/2018 20:38

Yes, it’s just you. Seems she isn’t interested in being a meanie and keeping the ball.

She’s just not going to risk ugly damage to her pricey grass, in the garden of her own home.

Your son will get back his ball, and has now learned the hard way not to kick it along a road.

strongerthan · 21/04/2018 20:41

I've just had mine relaid, I can't walk on it for 3 weeks either.

It cost a fortune!!!

Smeddum · 21/04/2018 20:49

@Sparklingbrook I’ll moan too I’m sure Grin

greendale17 · 21/04/2018 20:58

Your poor son. How disappointing for him.

Surely she could get it carefully? You could hit it out of the flowerbed with a stick or net or something. That would be the decent, kind thing to do. Children do silly things sometimes.

This reminds me of a next door neighbour we had when growing up. If our balls ever went over, the man would puncture them before throwing them back. Sad

I can't see any similarities at all. The boy has been told to wait as getting the ball isn't possible right now. The woman isn't being spiteful or breaking/refusing to return the ball for the sake of it.

AlexaAmbidextra · 21/04/2018 22:08

Your poor son. How disappointing for him.

Oh fgs. Poor little snowflake may learn a lesson with luck and perhaps he and his mother won’t be so entitled in future.

tenredthings · 21/04/2018 22:17

Get a ladder and go over the hedge to get it thereby avoiding the grass !

Xenia · 21/04/2018 22:23

Gosh I thought footballs were under £10 because they get lost so often and break. I would never buy an expensive one. Also it's her grass.

I hope you've given your son a good telling off by the way rather than as far too many parents do always take the side of the naughty child.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 21/04/2018 22:24

Footballs are £4 in sports direct for anyone with kids who kick them into gardens on a regular basis Grin

Scabetty · 21/04/2018 22:25

Disappointments are part of life. Kids who think mummy can sort everything regardless of their bad choices do well to have a few little ones as they grow up. This is a good life lesson for him. Grass lady is doing him a favour Smile
