To take two year old back to A&E?

FridgeCut · 21/04/2018 15:24

On Thursday my 2 year old fell over and hurt his wrist, I wasn't with him but his dad and grandmother say he was beside himself but then was ok, just very quiet. He was very upset that evening and struggled to sleep.

Friday morning my husband took him to A&E, he was holding his arm against himself and using it as little as possible. He said it was poorly. A&E had a quick look, told my husband it was soft tissue and sent him home.

He is still very reluctant to use it, husband has taken him to a party and has rung to say he isn't using it and was in pain on the bouncy castle and had to come off holding his arm.

Would it be unreasonable to take him back and ask for them to do an x-ray? This boy is a trojan, he cut his face open two months ago down to bone, he cried for ten seconds and didn't bat an eyelid during gluing and steri strips being applied.

Is this just how toddlers are with bad soft-tissue damage? There is no bruising to see so it all seems really odd. He's protecting it a lot and is obviously in pain poor boy :(

Not improving = take him back.

Definitely get him back and request it's x-rayed. If it is soft tissue damage it is probably just as painful, if not more so than a break. My DD3 sprained her ankle just before Christmas and she wasn't properly walking, without a limp until the end of Jan.

MiniCooperLover · 21/04/2018 16:25

If you genuinely think he may have broken it please don't leave it, take him today! It doesn't matter if it's busy he'll be seen. Our A&E has a separate kids section. My DS has had a broken arm and he protected it too.

MaisyPops · 21/04/2018 16:30

Soft tissue injuries can hurt like a bitch and hurt more than a break.

If you're in any doubt then take them back to be seen.

SluttyButty · 21/04/2018 16:35

God yes go back. They didn't think my son's arm was to bad until the Xray showed a really nasty fracture.

GeminiWarrior · 21/04/2018 16:38

Dd was seen within 40 mins on a Saturday night at a&e recently- might not be as long as you think :)

Sixgeese · 21/04/2018 17:07

Have they X rayed?

When DD1 was two, DH slipped when carrying her down the stairs, I took them both to hospiral. He was X rayed and had broken his ribs, but DD1 wasn't, they told me she had a bad sprain and I was to make her walk even though it was really painful.

In the following week, she was in so much pain, I took her to the GP to check that all was ok and was told it was. A week later I noticed her leg had started to bow. I took her back to hospital and insisted on an Xray even though they told me it was all in my imagination.

It turned out she had broken her leg in three places, and I was told off by the person who plastered it for not getting it sorted earlier.

If in doubt, please get it double checked, you know you child a lot better than anyone else and hospital do make mistakes.

NovichoksAway · 21/04/2018 17:25

Take him back, I had to take my son back aged 2 twice because he wouldn't walk on his leg after a trip. Despite a nurse telling me 'he had to try walking on it as it wouldn't get better otherwise' I took him back and he had a hairline fracture that was missed on the first look at the X-ray.

CheeseandGherkins · 21/04/2018 17:30

Don't leave it until tomorrow, doesn't matter if it's busy...Just go there and get him seen to. He's in pain, poor boy, and only 2 years old. I'd be back there right now.

DairyisClosed · 21/04/2018 17:34

Take him back. The hospital where I live is full of morons. They genuinely don't believe that you can be in pain if you aren't screaming your head off like some kind if animal. Just tell them that he goes silent when in pain. And keep saying it.

notapizzaeater · 21/04/2018 17:36

Poor love, can't believe they just sent him home without x raying it

FridgeCut · 21/04/2018 17:42

He's gone to A&E, he came back from the party and won't let anyone touch it and won't use it at all. He wasn't too bad this morning, wasn't using it much at all but wasn't actively acting pained. He apparently fell on the bouncy castle (yes, bad idea to have been on it at all) and since then has been really protecting it and pained. DH isn't particularly happy and wanted to wait till the morning, but I said no, let's get it dealt with. They can tell us we are stupid and it's just soft tissue, that's fine, at least we have looked after him.

If he's in that much pain two days after the injury I think you're right. And at a party kids may be able to ignore niggling pain or discomfort. To not want to join in a party as it hurts so much? Definitely worth checking today. Hope you're there and seen soon.

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 21/04/2018 17:55

Glad you've taken him back, it seems something more than just bruising.

FridgeCut · 21/04/2018 17:56

It would be more traditional for me to have posted on AIBU, got sensible advice to take the poor child back and then ignored you all.... but sometimes... :)

I hope your DH stands his ground OP and asks for an X-ray. I know they don't like to do them too often to small kids but sometimes it's necessary

bluerunningshoes · 21/04/2018 18:01

good to hear he's at a&e.
if it is broken, being in a cast will relieve the pain immensly (speaking from experience).
good luck!

Juanbablo · 21/04/2018 18:03

I'm glad he's been taken back to A&E. I'm quite surprised the nurse didn't get him an x-ray the first time. We've been in a few times with the children and they've done an x-ray each time (nothing broken thankfully). Let us know how he gets on. I hope you are recovering well from your surgery.

creampie · 21/04/2018 18:10

Yes, go back.

All A&E departments I've worked in always leave you with the advice to return if there's no improvement or things get worse

Starlight2345 · 21/04/2018 18:13

Glad he has gone back .

Kidssendingmenuts · 21/04/2018 18:14

Why the hell didnt a&E X-ray him! Idiots. Defo take him back, this is from a mother who's son has broke his arm twice in three places in the space of 6 months! He did the same as your son and held it to his side and wouldn't use it xx

Rachie1986 · 21/04/2018 18:16

Glad you've gone back. Hope they have a thorough look

3luckystars · 21/04/2018 18:18

I’m glad you brought him back. My sisters son broke his leg, they initially sent him home because apparently it is extremely hard for a small child to pinpoint where pain is coming from so the missed it as it was further up.

Good luck I hope your son is ok and well done for taking him back.

FridgeCut · 21/04/2018 18:31

He's being sent for an x-ray, at least then we can all relax knowing they were right yesterday and it is just soft tissue :)

Sending Thanks to you and DS OP, hope he's all right, poor pickle
