To worry about DS and diabetes

My DH says I have a tendency to pathologise things but I’m worried. School said he was very tired this week but seemed to perk up towards the end of the week. He has big dark circles. We were on holiday last week and had LOADS of wees but didn’t seem to be drinking any more than usual. He has a tendency to be particularly grumpy when hungry but seems worse around this at the moment.
He was very ratty but then he’s quite highly strung at the best of times. He’s had an eye test recently and they said he was fine but that he needs a dyslexia assessment, which is happening next week. He’s very very behind at School with problems with inattentive ADD, and is hypermobile. We were doing some simple homework last night on the computer and he couldn’t count the objects on the screen and said his eyes weren’t working and things were moving around. He’s on the skinny end of normal.
What’s going on? I’m worried about diabetes. My DH says he’s just run down maybe. He’s 7.

Sitting around worrying is pointless. You need to write down all of the issues/symptoms you're concerned about and get him to the doctor as soon as possible.

Think the 4 T's:

Tired
Thirsty
Thinner
Toilet

If you're worried, definitely take him to dr to get tested - it does sound as if he has some of the symptoms. Hopefully it's nothing, but you don't mess around with diabetes, so better to be safe than sorry. 🤞🏻he's just growing or something.

Saucyjane that’s a good list. He’s not more thirsty but he’s defo weeing more, and they’re a big old wee, not a little sprinkle.

I can get him to the docs on Tuesday, I don’t think this is an out of hours thing, do you?Aquamarine, I’ll write it down. He was being investigated for anaemia last year but turned out to be borderline and slightly low vitD.

I've just had a baby with GD, so spent a lot of time in the diabetes clinic at the hospital staring at a poster with those 4 T's on it!

It sounds as if Tuesday should be fine as it's precautionary rather than emergency, and it's only a couple of days away, but someone with more experience than me will probably come along shortly.

Just make sure they do a blood test - not just urine. My daughter had a negative urine test aged 4 and by the time she was properly diagnosed with a blood test 6 months later she was extremely ill with a blood sugar of 45! Good luck though, hopefully he’ll be fine if he’s not showing signs of thirst.

If you smell pear drops on his (on nail varnish remover) please take him to A&E as a matter of urgency.

If you are going to the GPs don't let them fob you off with urine test as Adventuritis says. Also, get them to do the finger prick there and then. GPs will often refer for a fasting glucose test but this is not the right diagnostic for type one diabetes. HBA1C can be useful if the finger prick is in range but you want a longer term measure, but again, finger prick is the correct protocol.

Thankyou all so much, going to see doc first thing tomorrow and won’t be fobbed off!

How did it go?

Focalpoint · 24/04/2018 21:07

Hi. My ds age 11 was diagnosed with Type 1 last August. He got visibly thinner over the space of about 3 weeks and was peeing and drinking all time.

Fingers crossed for you that your son is OK. But if he is T1 it is a very hard road at the start but you’ll get there slowly over time.

Thinking of you and hoping all ok.
