Local pub turning into a dive what can I do

Live across the road from what was a local family pub had a big refurb a couple years ago and is getting increasingly busy great.
Last few months it’s been going downhill fast serving people obviously drink/underage, people doing coke in the toilets and last night the police were called due to a big brawl in beer garden at 8pm!
Think I’m going to speak to manager and licensing at council is there anything else we could do? Such a shame was a lovely place before

Don't be surprised if speaking to the manager doesn't get you very far.

Pretty much everything you have mentioned will have been caused by management decisions, good pubs don't suddenly turn bad by accident. They are choosing to employ staff that allow underage drinking, continue serving people who are drunk and allowing it to be used as somewhere where people feel comfortable to take coke.

It's not a public service though and other than reporting the licensing issues there isn't much you can do other than not supporting it with your custom.

That's why it's increasingly busy, they've let their standards drop. As pp said, speaking to management achieve much if they are raking in the profits.

Is it under new management since the refurb?

Contact your council, they will be in charge of licensing. Go to Trading Standards if you suspect underage sale of alcohol. If they are part of a chain/larger group I would make a complaint to Head Office rather than talking to the local Manager.

Same management company for last 3-4 years I think. Good point I suppose they are making good money it’s packed out most of the time but would have lost them money last night as they weren’t allowed to serve alcohol for a while as the police put that on hold while they were sorting out the fighting in the beer garden- most people left then

Supposed to have opened at 11 but looks like it’s staying shut for now

Ooooooh, interesting. Perhaps they found evidence enough for a temporary withdrawal of licence or something.

Do the management own it?

NumberFrame · 21/04/2018 16:46

It did open but later spoke to manager they called the police themselves apparently due to the druggies not going when told. Said they wanted to get on top of it.
Anyway police now back apparently the same groups of lads come back and won’t leave.

If police attended and closed it down then the licencing body for your area will be aware and should take action.

There's nothing you can do.

Serving underage. Are you really sure? It's a ridiculous hefty personal fine so I don't know any licensee who would risk it. 18 year olds look young.

Drugs - that's a problem everywhere. I mean everywhere. The nice local Wetherspoons? There are probably people doing coke in there. Unless I can physically catch them in the act I can't do a thing. I can't search people and good luck getting police to do it. If I catch someone I can bar them and report them at the monthly police meeting.

As for fights. Sun's out, guns out. We had a nice scrap today. The police popped in afterwards. If they come during the fight they will stop service for a while but they're not going to lose their license. Takes a stabbing to do that (and only then if they prove licensing conditions weren't met).
