help - is this real?

Posting here for traffic really - I've just tried to sign into an email account that I've had since 2013 - and I've had a box come up asking if I'm an adult! So - I hit the "I'm an adult" button, and I'm asked for proof - my birthdate - and following that - the next page is asking for my credit card details - is this real, or a scam. Anyone else see this?

Yes, a scam! What email account is this?!

DairyisClosed · 20/04/2018 23:10

Of course it is a scam

Fruitcorner123 · 20/04/2018 23:10

It's a scam. Don't give your credit card details!!

Mightymucks · 20/04/2018 23:12

Possibly, possibly not. I had to do a genuine credit card confirmation with gmail recently because I had accidentally changed the date on my personal details to make me under 18.

Google takes a quid and gives it to charity. What is the provider?

PurpleDaisies · 20/04/2018 23:12

You’re not seriously questioning if this is a scam?!!

wooster16 · 20/04/2018 23:13

For goodness sake of course it’s a scam. Please, close that down and do not put your details in. And refer to this website for the future: takefive-stopfraud.org.uk

Mightymucks · 20/04/2018 23:15

You’re not being given accurate advice here. Some email providers do credit card age verification. Some info on Google’s process here:

support.google.com/accounts/answer/1333913?hl=en

Walkingdeadfangirl · 20/04/2018 23:16

Do you even have to ask. ITS A SCAM!

Wornoutbear · 20/04/2018 23:18

The request appears to come from microsoft - and I can't get into my emails at all!

OP posts:
Fruitcorner123 · 20/04/2018 23:19

mightymucks if it were that then it says they can either provide a birth certificate or the credit card transaction. This info will be made explicit by Google and the OP would have a clear idea of what was going on.

wooster16 · 20/04/2018 23:20

Can you screengrab the page without revealing any personal information wornoutbear?

Wornoutbear · 20/04/2018 23:22

not really wooster

OP posts:
Mightymucks · 20/04/2018 23:23

Microsoft also do credit card verification:

support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4090292/microsoft-account-age-verification-for-parental-consent

You can do it manually with a form, but it’s not necessarily a scam.

It might be worth trying to log into the email from a different account and seeing if the same thing happens incase there is malware on the one you are using.

But people assuring you this is definitely a scam are not correct as email providers do this sometimes.

Fruitcorner123 · 20/04/2018 23:24

If it were me I would ring them and check or email their customer service from a different email .

Is there any reason they would suddenly have changed your date of birth on the account

Mightymucks · 20/04/2018 23:25

You can follow that link I put in above OP, that’s definitely a Microsoft one (please feel free to check) and you can verify via that or contact them.

Wornoutbear · 20/04/2018 23:25

no - there's really nothing - I bloody hate these things! GRRRR

OP posts:
Mightymucks · 20/04/2018 23:27

Can you screen grab the request?

Wornoutbear · 20/04/2018 23:32

Not really Mucks, as it has my name on it.

OP posts:
Fruitcorner123 · 20/04/2018 23:36

Follow mightmucks link and scroll down. At the bottom is a link to the page you sound like you are describing so you abould be able to put your details in there knowing that it's legitimate.

Mightymucks · 20/04/2018 23:42

Are there any other devices you can try from? Kids or partners phones?

Wornoutbear · 20/04/2018 23:48

Mucks - I followed that link, and it came up with the same info, so it would all seems legit. I can't think of anything I could have done that would make it seem like I'm a child! I think I'll go to bed now - thank you all

OP posts:
Walkingdeadfangirl · 20/04/2018 23:49

my children have had email address for years, they have never ever been asked to prove their age.

Mightymucks · 20/04/2018 23:53
