Cooking rice.

Just cooked and eaten my dinner which included rice and it was clumps of mush again. How do you cook it so you can see the grains? Any advice? Followed the packets instructions but there must be a trick I’m missing. Thanks.

Dried rice? 1 part rice to 2 parts water (cold) put on lid and cook until water all absorbed. Do not stir!!!

SluttyButty · 20/04/2018 21:21

I use a rice cooker and use basmati rice. Perfectly cooked every single time Grin

Idontdowindows · 20/04/2018 21:23

What I do for any type of rice and it always works:

Litre or 2 of water, bring to the boil. chuck in 1 or 2 measuring cups rice. Stir until it's back to the boil, lid on, on low for 10 minutes.

After 10 minutes take off heat, drain rice, leave to stand for another 10 minutes with lid on pan.

Hey presto, perfect rice every time.

VladmirsPoutine · 20/04/2018 21:23

Do you rinse the rice before you cook it?

n0ne · 20/04/2018 21:24

1 part rice, 2 parts water, lid, bring to the boil then turn down as low as it'll go and cook until you can't see the water anymore. Turn off but leave on hob another 5 mins or so for it to continue steaming and the water to absorb. DO NOT STIR.

wendiwoowho · 20/04/2018 21:28

I boil it for 8 minutes, drain and put back into the pot with lid on for another 8 minutes. Works every time.

Pibplob · 20/04/2018 21:29

Thanks all. I do rinse it and yes, dried rice. I rinse, put in pan of boiling water. Then cook on low for about 10 mins. Maybe it’s the stirring. I do stir it. Would that cause mushy clumps?

Yep for sure

teenmumandsowhat · 20/04/2018 21:31

According to a friend who is from Ghana, for perfect rice you cook it in a wide shallow pan, on a low heat, don’t stir till the end, and add a generous spoon of butter in once done! I’ve tried it, it tastes amazing

dontticklethetoad · 20/04/2018 21:32

I think you can boil up rice pretty much however you like as long as you don't stir it!

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 20/04/2018 21:32

let me give you my totally foolproof method for lovely dry rice.

Boil a kettle and heat some oil in a pan.

Fry a cup ful of rice in the oil stirring until it is transparent and nice and hot.

Pour on exactly just under twice the amount of boiling water to the rice.
Add salt stir once, put a lid on and crank down the heat to minimum. Leave for 20 mins,

No more mushy lumps i promise.

InDubiousBattle · 20/04/2018 21:32

Microwave rice. I tried for years to make rice. Tried every tip in the book. Microwave rice is the way forward!

UserInfinityplus1 · 20/04/2018 21:32

Buy the frozen packets from M&S. Microwave for 3 mins. Perfect rice every time.

perroy · 20/04/2018 21:39

Get a rice cooker
The basic models are effective and cheap

FrankWelker · 20/04/2018 21:39

I posted this a few months ago. Someone told me to buy a rice cooker- it is absolutely brilliant! One of the most used kitchen gadgets I’ve ever bought.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 20/04/2018 21:40

I now boil basmati in a lot of water and drain in a fairly large sieve . Leave for a few minutes and good

I know that’s not the way but it’s the only one that works

Storm4star · 20/04/2018 21:41

As another poster said, you don’t add rice to boiling water. Add it to cold water and then cook. That’s the issue.

Lovesagin · 20/04/2018 21:41

Boil in the bag rice is your friend. Not had unintended rice pudding since I started buying it and no faffing with rinsing it for an age

divafever99 · 20/04/2018 21:42

I've tried for years op with no success so it's boil in the bag or microwave pouch in our house!

user1473878824 · 20/04/2018 21:44

Going against the grain here (I’ll get my coat), after watching a Jamie Oliver video I boil my rice hard for ten minutes and since then it’s been perfect each time rather than slushy. But still, however much rice you use, same amount twice of water.

Parker231 · 20/04/2018 21:44

Microwave rice every time - perfect rice 100% of the time

OldHag1 · 20/04/2018 21:45

What kind of rice are you using? I think some rice tends to mush more than others.

Use dried rice
Rinse
Shake pan so rice is level
Add water (put thumb tip on top of rice add water to the knuckle)
Heat until starting to boil
Give a quick stir
Put lid on
Turn to the lowest heat and cook for 10 mins
Turn heat off
Give a quick stir
Put lid on and leave until ready to use

kindlemanic · 20/04/2018 21:46

We rinse until water is clear, fry off in butter. Add water and simmer until cooked. Drain and rinse in freshly boiled water.

GrumpyGoose · 20/04/2018 21:55

Equal quantities rice and cold water in a pan. Bring to boil and let it bubble away on medium heat until water has nearly all evaporated. Lid on and heat down low and allow it to steam until water evaporates completely. Don't stir, don't remove the lid til its time to eat. Has never failed us!

bilbodog · 20/04/2018 22:03

Ive always had success with basmati rice using 1 cup rice to 2 cups water - bring to boil and gently simmer for about 15-20 mins. I never rinse the rice. When i tried ordinary long grain rice it didnt work so well.
