Hi all,
I have an interview for a job which pays £24k (London). Currently I'm on £30k but extremely unhappy in my job and it's affecting my general sense of wellbeing and self-worth. The new job is in the same sector, but a different role with a different company - however obviously there's no way to tell what it will be like until I get there.
I'm really worried I will start new job and it will be similar, and I will be lots worse off. After taxes and student loan etc, I've worked out I will be earning about £230 less each month, which I think will be a struggle, but doable. I don't have any children but I am partially financially responsible for my partner (he's studying a PhD so earns even less!).
Please can anyone give any advice? It would be great to hear from anyone in the same position as i'm currently feeling quite lost about what to do.

I was made redundant from a job I hated a while ago and was offered my current role. Very similar salary differences to you.

Initially I really wasn't sure about it as it it was quite a reduction in salary but I went to meet them anyway and I knew instantly that they were a company that cares for their employees. They actually did up the salary a little when they realised the difference.

Definitely go to the interview and see what they are like. What do you have to lose? You can still say no if you decide it's not for you.

I'm so happy I took this job, I didn't realise quite how bad my old company was until I saw what it could be like. I'm much happier now and it's made a huge difference to my moods.

At your salary level I would not advise you to take a pay cut. Hold out for a new job that will pay more than £30k. When you're talking about a cut of £230 per month that is a direct hit on your quality of life which could make you even more miserable as your spending options will be limited.

Believe in yourself - another job will come up at the right salary for you.. Keep on pushing.

@bougiequeen thanks for this - however my current job is a bit of a weird one in that I think it’s drastically overpaid. I’ve been applying for jobs for 6 months (ranging in salary from 25-30k) and have had nothing so feel silly turning something down. If I took this lower paid job I think it would give me more skills than my current one, so hopefully in the long term would allow for more progression.

@dobbyisFREE Thanks for advice and glad to hear it’s been better for you. I’m hoping I can get a sense of the place when I have my interview but you’re right I might as well have the interview and decide - I probably won’t even get offered the position but wanted to think what I would a if I was.

When my daughter was born, both my OH and I wanted to change careers so that we would get to spend more time with her and enjoy being with her in her early years.
We moved to a more affordable area, and both found new jobs - our household income went from £80,000 to £30,000 but we've never been happier.

Money isn't everything - your happiness and quality of life is more important.

Will you still have to pay student loans at that salary level?

inneedofgoodideas · 20/04/2018 13:14

@citysnicker yes student loans will be less but the repayment threshold is 18k

@2birds1chick thanks I’m glad it has worked out better for you that way round :)
