To wonder if Labour will apologise for Windrush

It seems like the Conservatives are doing all they can and have apologised for Windrush.

Now we know that it was a Labour government who decided to destroy the landing cards of those Commonwealth citizens, will JC apologise (as he said May should) or will he shut up and move on to more misguided posturing.

AIBU in thinking that populist grandstanding is not in the best interests of our country?

Diane Abbot gets a very bad press, probably because she is a woman and black.
Phillip Hammond, the Chancellor got the cost of HS2 wrong by £20 billion, it was completely ignored by the media, D.Abbot, whilst ill, messed up on the cost of extra Police, she was crucified.

Catspaws · 19/04/2018 15:14

I think JC was asking May to apologise for the current uncertainty and threats of deportation. That's the real scandal.

That said, there would be no harm in a symbolic acknowledgement from labour that documents shouldn't have been destroyed. Only danger is it gives the tories a chance to punt blame at Labour instead of actually reassuring and protecting the windrush generation, which should be the priority.

'but appear as if they might be immigrants'

Diane Abbott is referring to a worsening of race relations through fostering a culture of hostility towards immigration, in general, not specifically to the effect of the Bill on Windrush citizens, in particular. In which she was absolutely correct, but gives her no claim to having identified the problem at the time.

'appear as if they might be immigrants' means British nationals who look different. However, she wasn't shadow H.S. at the time under Miliband, so can be excused for not having the resources to research the Bill. I'm just saying that she can't claim much credit now for campaigning against the scandal. That's down to investigative journalism. Corbyn and his inner circle have been far too busy in-fighting and taking over the LP machinery to focus on what they should be doing.

mostdays · 19/04/2018 15:28

You know Diane well enough to have clarified with her what she was referring to and exactly what she meant? I wish I was that well connected.

Where is she making those claims, anyway?

HadronCollider · 19/04/2018 15:28

The thing is politicians generally are not being pushed/required by an increasingly nakedly corporate press and media to take responsibility. Yes the landing cards should not have been destroyed under Labour, but whoever is in charge now should be walking, because it has become a problem under their watch, and two, they knew beforehand that policy changes could result in exactly the scenario as is happening now. Frankly, the calibre of westminster politicians is so low, I dont see myself voting for any of them next election, think I'll swing to something radical.

Thymeout · 19/04/2018 15:30

Jasjas - yes, being a woman and black has something to do with Diane Abbott's bad press. But she isn't popular within the LP either, beyond Corbyn's immediate circle. She comes across as patronising, and, to be frank, lazy - tho' that might be her condition. If it is, she should have stepped down.

Thymeout · 19/04/2018 15:55

mostdays Surely it's obvious from the text you quoted? If you have to know DA personally in order to understand her speeches in the HoC, no wonder we have a problem.

In my criticism of the LP, I'm talking about the last 5 months, since cases started appearing in the press, not the original Bill.

Ohmydayslove · 19/04/2018 16:04

Dianne although I am absolutkry sure a great constituency MP and a very nice woman, and to be admired for her true grit to be the first black female MP clearly lacks the attention to detail and general incompetence under questioning to grasp the actual facts isntfrom bench material.

Neither of course is Boris Johnson. However Dianne is vilified as stupid, she isn’t, while Boris is a laughable Bafoon, he isn’t. He’s stupid.

Anyway I think apologising for something that didn’t happen under your watch is playing to the gallery. Best just sort this out and move on.

To add please please labour ditch Corbyn!!! He couldn’t even get TM on the ropes for this!! Come on Yvette cooper. Sirzy control before labour implodes.
