To hate having every 'event' pushed upon me

I like springtime, I like Easter, have nothing against summer. don't care for Halloween and love Christmas.

It seems like each year that each 'thing' is being pushed before the other 'thing' has happened.

My local Tesco was pushing beachwear when there was snow. The Easter eggs were reduced before Easter weekend to make room for summer garden furniture. There are 'back to school' uniforms and its bloody April.

The ultimate piss take was going to Centra on Boxing Day and seeing a Creme Egg.

Am I just getting old and grumpy, or is it legitimate whinge-baggery to complain that we dont get to enjoy any event at this point, because the next one is already being foisted upon us?

(highlight of last year was August radio advert: Are you concerned that your dining table will not fit the family round at Christmas? Come to (store that remains nameless though I would love to shame) we do extended credit!0

You are getting old and grumpy, no one is forcing anything on anyone. If you dont want to celebrate any particular event during the year then dont. You have the choice!

Bah humbug!

RunMummyRun68 · 19/04/2018 00:22

8 more paydays til Xmas!!!

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 19/04/2018 00:23

I will save my 'bah humbugs' for the Christmas decorations in tesco that go up in October @Walkingdeadfangirl Grin

It's not a mean spirited post.

I don’t think you are old and grumpy, I’m 23 and I hate seeing Easter Eggs in the shops on Boxing Day, Christmas Cards in the shops in August and Halloween decorations out in summer. My OH’s dad said it’s being going on since he was a manager for Woolworths over 30 years ago

eggsandchips · 19/04/2018 00:27

It's just marketing. They always want us to be spending on some sort of upcoming event.

Livinglifepeachy · 19/04/2018 02:50

Arghh I know what you mean op funny was just talking to a friend about this the other day how the hype to Christmas from sep/October just gets me so excited by the time it's Christmas am already over it

Shadow666 · 19/04/2018 03:29

I live abroad, so we get double events as we do the UK ones and the local ones.I do like doing something special for events but I set my limits. For example, I'll do an egg hunt in the garden for the kids at Easter with chocolate eggs and sweets and maybe bake an Easter cake or do a craft but I don't do all the crazy present giving that some friends do.

Copperbonnet · 19/04/2018 03:34

To be fair they aren’t being pushed on you. They are just businesses trying to make money. Which is after all the purpose of a business.

You don’t have to buy or in fact participate in any way.

SabineUndine · 19/04/2018 03:38

The problem is there are people who buy Christmas stuff in August and all the shops are competing for business. If people would stop buying months before the event it might stop.

MissCherryCakeyBun · 19/04/2018 03:55

Many people ( including me and family) budget by buying "event" items over a few paydays to spread the cost out and not end up with loads on credit cards
If you don't like it or it's not relevant don't buy it....., we were in the US for thanksgiving but didn't "buy in" as it wasn't relevant.

As a certain person said ......Let it go [santa]

GreenItWas · 19/04/2018 04:07

Try working in the town where I work. The Christmas decs go up in the streets before Armistice day which pisses me off no end as the poppy day ceremony is taking place with fucking garish penguins and santa in his sleigh flapping about in the wind during the minutes silence and then they are not taken down until a week before Easter the following year. It gets right up my nose but I am turning into one of 'those' types it would seem :(

Snog · 19/04/2018 04:20

Maybe try online shopping to give yourself a break from supermarket marketing

Padfoot100 · 19/04/2018 04:32

Yes OP totally agree, drives me mad. Also all these things that didn't used to be events suddenly being commercialised by the supermarkets so they can make some extra money. It makes me want to run a mile

BuggerBugger · 19/04/2018 04:45

I agree to a certain extent although I think the problem is that we allow events to be about the commercial side of things. Christmas and Easter aren’t any longer about the religious festivals or indeed about family, they just seem to focus on what we can consume or the value of gifts.

We allow commercial enterprises to dictate to us far too much.

c75kp0r · 19/04/2018 05:01

They get you online too though. I resist and try to instill common sense in dcs. They sort of see what I mean, but also they think Im a grumpy old baggage. I dont think martin sorrell or charrles saatchi would enjoy an evening in my company.

Nakedavenger74 · 19/04/2018 05:08

You went to (what I assume to be) a shopping a centre on Boxing Day? You are the kind of person they are aiming this event marketing at! You are part of the problem!

thebewilderness · 19/04/2018 05:37

They used to say that they put things out early so the families could put them in the mail to get to their military family members at the front in time for the holiday.
I don't think they were telling the truth. Do you?
