Secondment screwing me over??

Posting for traffic as didn't get a reply on careers last time!

I have been asked to cover my bosses maternity leave. I have been given the package for this today. Firstly I have to increase my amount of days I work so how my company does this is initially base it on your regular salary so say I am doing an extra day I get an extra days salary. On top of this they are the paying me an uplift for increased responsibility. The uplift is £5k. This is the part I am feeling aggrieved at.

If they went external to fill this role and I stayed in my current role it would easily cost them £45k + to recruit. As it happens they are paying me for an extra day plus £5k so around £15k more but only the £5k is attributable to the extra responsibility iyswim. The role will include staff management of several staff that I don't have responsibility for currently as well as income responsibility. Again not currently my responsibility.

Overall the salary is ok I just feel as though I'm being taken advantage of. I should add I am not doing the entirety of my bosses role but 80%. The fact remains if they went externally it would cost them a lot more. So AIBU to feel like I'm being played here?

If they went externally then surely they would hire someone at the same level of your boss and so would pay more, presuming you're not at that level/experience yet and so are paid less.

However, to agree to a secondment without negotiating the package first is very naive.

Also they're paying you £15k more and only £5k is the extra responsibility so it's £10k for an extra day??
That puts your salary more than your bosses? Hmm

Agree with greenstars i think there is some bad maths going on here...

Irrespective of that there is nothing stopping you telling them that having considered the package offered you would like them to either revise it or look externally as it was not commensurate with expectations. And be totally neutral about it.
As i see it either you keep the current job or they give you more either way it’s no skin off your nose as you are no worse off

I haven't agreed to anything yet! This was the offer. I said it would cost at least £45k to recruit it would depend on the hours etc what we do is quite specialised and unlikely they would fill at full time level it would be more likely to be a consultant for a few days. I would guess my boss is £60-70k.

If your boss is say £65k and the cost for them is £45k that seems really low? Recruitment fees are generally 10-20%? So that would give a salary of half your boss?
All seems a bit strange.

Either way, if you're covering 80% of your bosses work that takes it down to £52k. Why don't you say you'll do it for the middle figure between yours and that? So if you're on £40k, ask for £46k for example?

RandomMess · 18/04/2018 20:28

Presumably you are handing some of your work onto someone else?

You also need to consider if the experience will progress your career, perhaps they won't return or will want to job share...

Flopsymopsycottontailbuns · 18/04/2018 20:30

As I say it would depend on how many days etc they recruited for to fill it, not entirely easy to put a figure on.
I guess my issue is I could get the money for an extra day any time (I don't as I choose to work part time, have said will step up as a favour) so I could get the extra £10k just for doing an extra day but the £5k is for the extra responsibility of which there is a shedload and it's just narked me. I have been asking for salary for months since it was first suggested and then with a month to go I get this. I have not agreed to anything yet but they are very assuming that I will. Going to get DH to run the numbers properly to check its not me. He has a maths degree so am assuming he'll get it right!

Ok so you're on £50k FTE and boss is £60-70k. You're only taking on 80% of their work but will get paid £55k. That's more than your boss gets for 80% of their work Hmm
