To think the gp was wrong?

My DS has come out with spots which look like chicken pox, he has had a temp & generally feeling unwell.

I took him to the gp who told me it's only an infection & NOT chicken pox. She seemed very confident about it but something tells me she's actually wrong as her words were "the spots aren't in the right place" Confused

I've attached the photo of some of spots on his back. He's 12 months old.

Am I wrong or is the gp maybe wrong??

Just to offer the counter view: Ds has had a viral rash that looked just like that.
When he had chickenpox it was obvious as they multiplied very quickly. Ones on the tongue look very strange.

I am completely immune to chicken pox (was tested for a job as an adult, never had them as a child) Dh has had them twice, once as a child and again as an adult.

Both my children had very few spots but they were definitely chicken pox. Not in the typical cluster scenario, but spot, then blistered head then scabbed over. No more than 25 spots each on their bodies.

The GP believed it may have been my immunity to it that has been passed on to the children resulting in such a small number of them. Dh had them everywhere, and I mean everywhere Grin

AcrossthePond55 · 18/04/2018 14:23

Keep him out of nursery and away from other children. If it's CP you'll know for sure soon enough as more spots will start popping up & scabbing over.

I didn't take either of mine to the doctor when they had CP, but they were older than 12 months. At that age I probably would have.

Both of mine had it really bad and I used (I'm in the US so the names may be different) Aveeno colloidal bath, Caladryl lotion, and Acetaminophen. Caveat; this was 20+ years ago and treatment advice may have changed!

It does look like chicken pox to me. Mine started on my forehead, my DD's first one was under her hairline, but they soon spread. They will probably look a bit like small blisters at one point.

My DD was at her most itchy 36 hours after I realised she had it. She was very lucky as they all came out and scabbed over within 5 days. I think it's often longer though.

CaviarAndCigarettes · 18/04/2018 14:28

Yep that looks like chicken pox. Two of mine have started with it today.

MrsPepperpot79 · 18/04/2018 14:30

looks just like cp - my 2 yr old just had it. Few on face (near mouth) and just a couple on back for the first day. Then they popped up on her chest and arms, masses in her nappy (as it's warm in there) and finally two in her mouth.

Antihistamines, poxclin mousse and eurax cream overnight!

stitchglitched · 18/04/2018 14:30

Btw piriton liquid really helped my DD with the itching and she slept better too!

Not to denigrate GPs at all, as they are fantastic in the main, BUT they won’t have had much real life experience of CP unless they are parents themselves. Because very few people take their poxy kids into the surgery. So it’s not something they see everyday IYSWIM. Especially if it’s not a classic presentation.

dirtyquerty · 18/04/2018 14:45

have they got the fluid filled blisters

WeirdyMcBeardy · 18/04/2018 14:49

Looks like CP to me. One of mine was quite ill with it, the other you wouldn't have even known they had it, was completely fine. Not all children are ill with it.

MissClareRemembers · 18/04/2018 15:03

My GP misdiagnosed chicken pox in DS as molluscum. However, DS had already had molluscum so we knew that was incorrect!

adayatthebeach · 18/04/2018 15:09

Wow what kind of doc can’t diagnose simple pox!!!

Hissy · 18/04/2018 15:10

TBH, in my experience (CP aged 30) you feel absolutely dreadful before the spots come out and actually a bit better when they do

It does look like CP to me too :(

user1471531877 · 18/04/2018 15:11

It could be hand foot and mouth - the spots can look a bit like chicken pox but smaller and can occur in other places eg buttocks and genitalia as well as expected places
Also tend to be less unwell with it

Tinkobell · 18/04/2018 15:35

Chicken pox have a small fluid filled head on them. They can be very itchy. Does he have this?
